Endorsement of the Uluru Statement from the Heart

Edmund Rice Education Australia unconditionally extends our support for the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart. The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation to the Australian people from First Nations Australians to walk together to build a better future. We accept this invitation and urge all across Australia to do so as a critical step towards Reconciliation.

We stand in solidarity, alongside our First Nations peoples, in their calls for a Voice and acknowledgment enshrined in the Australian Constitution. We believe that our future as a nation must be based on justice and liberation and that our First Nations peoples are entitled to the democratic right to have a voice indecisions that affect them.

The establishment of a First Nations Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Constitution, and the establishment of a Makarrata Commission for the purpose of truth-telling is at the centre of this justice. We support this road to Treaty. We commit to spread awareness of and support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart in all of our schools and communities. The Uluru Statement from the Heart will be displayed in all of our school communities as a sign of our commitment to these imperatives.

Wellness Week 2023

By Kaleb Rodriguez, Year 12 Prefect

This week we celebrated the 2023 Wellness Week with a collaboration of different activities, designed to refresh, open the minds and fulfil positive mental health with all students at the College. Each day had a different theme designed to challenge students to try new initiatives.

Mindful Mondayhad the boys learning the importance of box breathing, hosted by Mr Kenny Chan with his knowledge and years of experience using this technique. We also had presentations from YSafe which educated boys about cyberbullying and cybersafety, whilst also teaching them methods to manage peer conflict and respectful relationships. Finally, creative and fun activities such as mindful colouring-in and a silent disco allowed the boys to relax and have a good time.

Thankful Tuesday started with the annual coffee cup of Gratitude handed out to all teachers to ensure they started their Tuesday on a good note and to let them know how thankful we are as students are to have such supportive staff. The boys also had presentations from Zero2Hero where they learnt about learning to love and care for one another. The day once again included mindful colouring-in and some silent disco for the boys to relax and have some fun.

Wellness Wednesday was the day to get your favourite sneakers out and show them off to the community. The gold coin donations for this go to the Blue Tree Project, a great local organisation helping spark difficult conversations and encouraging people to speak up when battling mental health concerns. A major highlight of the day included the Ergo challenge at recess and lunch, which showed great effort from the boys and resulted in some impressive times.

Taste it Thursday started off with Years 4,5 and 6 testing out their balance and poses with mindfulness Yoga. The boys were also lucky enough to get a variety of food fans at recess and lunch to entice their tastebuds. There was also the annual Prefect netball match between the boys and girls at Mercedes in the afternoon, which resulted in the boys getting a comeback in the last quarter to steal the victory. The game was played in a great spirit, and it was amazing to have so much go towards the McGrath Foundation.

Fit Friday involved the middle school boys having a rotation between relaxing activities such as weaving, meditation and yoga where the boys had some time to reflect on what has been a busy week. The senior school boys had their highly anticipated indoor soccer match against staff which resulted in the staff winning, 3-1 and bragging rights. Finally, the junior school boys got to test out their balance and skills through a tough parkour course.

A big thankyou to all the amazing staff who organised and facilitated the different activities and hopefully as a College these activities can be implemented into our daily lives to improve our mental health and mindsets.
