Primary District Athletics Update

Last Thursday, 24 August, thirty-seven enthusiastic primary students, from years 3-6, attended the 2023 District Athletics event held at Meadowglen Athletics track in Epping. It was marvellous weather for the athletics event.

The students had earned their place in the district athletics squad through their strong efforts at our school athletics event last term.

District Athletics is a true carnival: there are kids participating all over the facility in a range of scheduled track and field events. The district PE staff are magnificent people, and all genuinely care about the students being active participants in healthy pursuits. We all work very well together and support each other as we organise, and run, the different district carnivals throughout the year. District Athletics is a time for students to compete against children, within their age group, from other schools – yes, there are placings, and potential qualification for Division Athletics carnival however, it is also a lovely time to build on prior learning within the athletic events in a fun, supportive, albeit competitive, situation.

The PVCC students were wonderful throughout the carnival; a few students had one event to participate in however, most students had two, or three, and in a few cases four, events to participate in over the course of the carnival. PVCC students were individually resilient and persistent, supportive to each other, regardless of any age gap, and were incredibly generous of spirit to children from other schools. One example I can cite was where, after a sprint final, I observed a PVCC student openly congratulate the first and second place getters with a handshake and a ‘well done’ where she, herself, was the third-place getter.

Several of our students earned ribbons for finishing either first, second, or third, in their events and excitingly, six of our students have qualified for Division Athletics (to be held next week, 7 September). A list of the ribbon earners, is below. Well done to all students.

I encourage all PVCC primary students to engage with athletics by watching athletics where possible, and practicing techniques for events, where practicable. The World Athletics Championships, held in Budapest, are currently on and there are plenty of YouTube highlights videos (i.e. Day 1 Highlights | World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 - YouTube)

For your information, Australian athletes have done incredibly well, including earning a number of medals – students should definitely check out Nina Kennedy ⏩ pole vaulting royalty! How Aussie won gold 🏅 then decided to share it 😍 | Fox Sports - YouTube for an example of a great effort as well as amazing sportsmanship.

School Sport Victoria

Recently, our Year 4 student, Bailey, played in a School Sports Victoria golf event. Bailey loves his golf, and this is the second consecutive year he has participated in such a golfing event.

Bailey accessed this opportunity via the School Sports Victoria website (SSV - School Sport Victoria – Home (ssv.vic.edu.au)).

There are plenty of opportunities for students with specific sporting interests to register for trials, or sporting, events. Interested parents can access the above website and select the ‘Parents’ link and then access the Register a student to trial for one of SSV's interstate Team Vic teams link. Ensure all relevant information, and instructions, are thoroughly read. You are welcome to contact me for any guidance around this process.

Overview of Interschool Golf Day by Bailey C (4K)

On the 21st of August, I played in an interschool sport match of golf at The Northern Golf Club.

It was a windy and muddy day. I came 7th out of 13 players with a score of 49. First place was a boy called Benjamin, with a score of 37.

My best shot of the day was on a par 4,  hole 17. It was my second shot, I hit it from around 110 m and landed it within 2m of the hole.

I love golf because it is calming, good exercise and can be enjoyed at any age.

I love being able to play with my Dad and Grandad.

When I get older, I would love to make it to the PGA or LIV golf tours.
