Level 5 & 6 Wonga Weekly

Week 9, Term 3

🌿 READING AND VIEWING

In Literature Circles this week, students will finish reading their novel. Before discovering the ending they are going to consider how they hope the novel could end realistically. They will use their prior knowledge of the character and the story development so far.

🪴What you can do at home:

Make sure your child is up to date with their weekly reading for their Literature Circle novel. Towards the end of the week, ask them to summarise the novel they have read this term.

🌿 WRITING

Students are continuing to use a variety of ways to generate ideas and foster an enjoyment of writing. They will be delving into developing characters with depth. Students will consider not only their external features, but their personal and interpersonal traits.

🪴What you can do at home:

Your child could consider characters they know well (eg. a favourite book or movie character) and write down the traits which make them an interesting character.

🌿 SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

🌱 Students will be continuing to investigate the different letter combinations which create the 'sh' sound (eg. shark, mansion, session, station, machine, deficient, sugar)

🌿 MATHS

🌱  Students will be investigating a variety of open ended and challenging problems which will deepen their understanding of the concept of percentage.

🪴What you can do at home:

Help your child to find real world examples of percentage (eg. shopping sales). Mathletics is also a fantastic resource to support your child's learning in this area.

🌿 CBL

🌱 Our Big Idea for Term Three is 'Diversity'.

🪴Our Essential Question is:

🌏 How can I become a mindful global citizen?

🪴Our Guiding Questions are:

🌏 How do people, places and cultures differ across the world?

🌏 How does geographical location impact on culture?

🌏 How does appreciating other cultures contribute to a connected global community?

🌏 How has diversity of First Nations peoples enhanced our community?

🌱 To build cultural awareness and sensitivity, students will look at how greetings and gestures differ between cultures around the world. They will consider how to navigate these differences respectfully.

🌿 HOMEWORK

In addition to reading four times a week for at least 20 minutes, Mathletics and 'What you can do at home' recommendations above, this term:

🌱 Grade 5: Students will receive their third 'Buddy Bag' task this week. Please support your child in working towards completing this.

🌱 Grade 6: Students have been given information to begin work on their 'Memory Book'. You should have received an email with information and a timeline. This information is also here:
