Prep Wonga Weekly

Week 9, Term 3

🧢 Hats! It is great to see that so many hats have come to school, as Spring is now here! If you haven't already, please send your child to school with a hat, which we will leave at school for the remainder of the year. If your child doesn't have a hat, they will need to play under the oak tree.

🦷 Dental Van forms: If you would like your child to visit the Dental Van (in late Term 4), please ensure that you have returned your consent form by September 11. If you need a new form, please see your child's teacher.

⭐️ News Groups for Wednesday 6th September: Signs of Spring in my garden!

📚 Reading

Students will continue to retell stories using the language of 'beginning, middle, end' in their guided reading sessions.

Students will continue to apply the fluency strategy of 'cross checking' as they read, as well as using expression in their voice.

What can you do at home?

-Log into Reading Eggs and find a suitable text (remember to change the age for 5 - 7 years old).

-Assist your child to read their take home book each night and their magic words.

-Help your child to read with expression and fluency as they read.

-Ask your child to retell the stories that you read by using 'beginning, middle and end' vocabulary.

-Help your child to cross check their oral reading with questions like, "Did what I read look right? Did it sound right? Does it make sense?"

🔡 Phonics

This week we will be learning the digraph 'ie' (as in pie). We will be reading and writing words with these digraphs (remember that a digraph is two letters that make one sound).

What you can do at home?

-Ask your child what words they know that contain the digraph 'ie'.

-What words can you find that have 'ie' in your take home books or magic words?

-Use your sound ring to continue to practise letter names and the sounds they make. Play some games using the sound ring cards (ideas are on the ring).

📝 Writing

Students will hear the story The Gruffalo in reading, and they will then do some writing about the story. Now that Spring is here, they will also do some writing about the new season. They will continue to practise handwriting using dotted thirds, with a focus on tail letters - g,j,y and z.

What can you do at home?

-Continue to encourage correct pencil grip (pointer on top).

-Practise writing names in school writing, with one capital letter at the beginning of their name.

-Encourage correct formation of letters.

-If your child writes at home, assist them to hear and write the sounds in words.

🔢  Maths

Students will learn about money, specifically Australian coins. They will recognise the coins and their value, building to the understanding that value is not related to size. They will learn about this in a variety of ways, such as through group discussions, challenging tasks and hands on play.

What can you do at home?

-Explore the Mathseeds app on the iPad. You might want to choose games / tasks that involve Australian coin recognition.

-If you have coins lying around the house, talk about them - what colour are they? What shape? What animal is on the coin? What is its value?

🌏 CBL - Diversity

Students will continue to work towards their challenge, which is to 'Celebrate Diversity in our Australian Community'.  They will continue to fill in their data chart on their favourite Australian animal. They will use this information to create digital posters and collages of their learning.

👯‍♀️ Friendology

Through role plays, students will put their learning into practise. They will revise the techniques that they have learnt to ensure that their friendships stay in the 'Green Zone'.
