Hands On Learning

This year CSPS is starting up a Hands On Learning program for selected students in Year 4-6. The program aims to work with a small group of students for 1 day a week to help them make connections to school, work on social and behavioural skills, develop leadership potential and much more. The Hands On Learning program was started over at Frankston High School in 1999 by Russell Kerr (OAM) and is now run in over 150 primary and secondary school across Australia.

The program operates on 4 key pillars:

  1. A place to belong
  2. People to belong to
  3. Real things to do
  4. A chance to give back

Students that join the program (after being referred by their classroom teacher) will work with Mr Holden and Mr Corcoran on a Friday to undertake different tasks around the school. While completing these tasks, students will have the opportunity to develop skills in teamwork, cooperation and communication. Each student will have an individualised Focus Plan which will also work on.

We are aiming to start the students in the by Friday Week 6.

The first task that the students coming into the program will undertake is setting up the Hands On Learning precinct at CSPS. We have had a 40ft shipping container kindly donated by Sea Road, and Mr Corcoran has been busy fitting out the inside to make it a suitable workspace for the program. We will soon have an area around the container fenced off and the students will be working with Bunnings to set up some wicking beds and do some landscaping.

How can our wonderful community get involved?? Well, we are looking for a range of different things to be donated to help the program get up and running. Below is a link you can click on to see the kinds of items we are looking for.

If you have something that you would like to donate or want to talk more about the program then come and have a chat to Mr Holden or send him and email via Compass.
