Year 6 News

Mathematics Focus
The Year 6 students have finalised their multiplicative and geometric pattern lessons and we have now moved onto the concept of integers. We will explore the number system extending infinitely below zero and develop strategies for counting and locating integers on a number line. Students will practice methods for accurately bridging zero while identifying both positive and negative integers on the number line.
Moving forward, the students will build on their understanding of integers by comparing the size of positive and negative integers. They will revise their understanding of the symbols greater than (>) and less than (<) to state whether given integers are more or less than others.
Literacy
Continuing our text study of Skellig, by David Almond, the students learnt to identify and evaluate the reactions of the main and supporting characters to events that happened in the story. Students have been adding details from the text to expand the character descriptions started in the previous lesson. Finally, students have reviewed the structure of a paragraph and used notes taken during the text reading lessons to compose a paragraph analyzing Michael’s reactions to the events happening around him.
Looking into the future, the Year 6 will discuss and reflect on the events of the chapters we have read. Utilizing newly introduced vocabulary from the text, the students will discuss and construct scenes from the book from a certain characters’ point of view.
Student Recounts
There have been some exciting events that have happened in Year 6 so far. Please enjoy some recounts from the students about the first half of the term.
Lunch Clubs
I do the run club. I love doing the run club because it is fun and it makes me happy when I run with my friends. I normally run outside of school on my own, so it makes me happy when I run with my friends.

In the last few weeks all the Year 6 have been running lunch clubs from 2 to 2.30 every day of the week. The lunch clubs are for anyone who loves to run, play board games, do art, all different lunch clubs have age limits depending on the difficulties and the equipment to ensure everyone’s safe and doesn’t get overwhelmed with older kids jumping around or running.

St Kilda Leadership Incursion
On Monday the 23rd of February the year sixes had a very exciting opportunity of meeting some of the players on the St Kilda AFL team, they came to our school talk about leadership as that is what we have been learning about in inquiry as year sixes are the leaders of the school. We first started by asking some questions about being a leader and what skills and attributes leaders hold. We also asked about what it is like being a professional AFL player and the challenges that come with it.
They told us some interesting and amazing stories and we all felt very inspired. They ended by telling us to never give up and go towards our dreams even if we are put down. We were so grateful of their visit as they gave us all some incredible advice.

They talked about important leadership qualities that included being good in school because even if you intend on having a sport career being principled is just as important no matter what you intend your career to be . They talked about their favourite goals , hardest teams to compete against and more. They also answered many questions we had.

On Thursday the 26th of February the year 4s, 5s and 6s had their school swimming carnival at Gsac. It was a great day with beautiful weather, and the students were exploding with excitement as they arrived at the pool. The first event was freestyle. Everyone was very fast as they flew through the pool but unfortunately there is only one winner.
Next was backstroke, a lot of people tried out for this event because it is one of the favourites and everyone did very well. The second last event was breaststroke; this is one of the hardest strokes to master but it is one of the easiest to do once you get the hang of it. We finally got to the last event which was butterfly. Not many people went in it as it is the hardest stroke but everyone who did it did really well.

Interschool Sports
Every Friday Year 6 and Year 5 have interschool sports. The sports are basketball, tee ball, lacrosse, Aus tag, volleyball, tennis and cricket. The 27th of February we had a double header which means we played one game after another and get back later than if we had had only one game. Luckily everybody is in a sport so we can all participate and have fun together. We are usually back by recess but with a double header we are back around fruit break.
