Congratulations to all of our Year 4 students who participated in the recent House Swimming Carnival. We were incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, sportsmanship and determination on display throughout the day. Many students bravely overcame their nerves and gave their best effort to earn valuable points for their house.

It was fantastic to see everyone proudly dressed in their house colours and cheering one another on. The positive team spirit and encouragement shown towards peers truly reflected our school values.

This term, students have been thoroughly enjoying our class novel, Theseus and the Minotaur. Through this exciting Greek myth, they have explored rich new vocabulary such as hubris and symbolism, helping to deepen their understanding and thinking skills.

In writing, students have been practising how to structure strong paragraphs. They are learning to include a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence when writing about the characters, setting, and key events in the story.

We have also been building our reading skills through teacher read-aloud sessions, paired reading, and independent reading time. It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm, curiosity, and thoughtful discussion during this unit. We are very proud of the students’ engagement and effort throughout this text study!

Last week, students completed their first Maths topic for the term: Place Value. They extended their understanding to include decimals, focusing on tenths and hundredths. Throughout the unit, students explored a range of engaging activities such as:

  • Recognising and writing large numbers in words

  • Using bar models to represent decimals

  • Adding and subtracting decimals

  • Representing decimals using area models and number lines

It has been wonderful to see students building confidence and accuracy when working with decimal numbers.

This week, we have begun our new topic on Angles. Students have been learning to identify, create and describe angles. They have enjoyed making angles with their bodies, spotting angles in the environment, and labelling them according to their size, name, and degree measurement.

We will continue developing this understanding over the next few weeks.

Times Tables Rock Stars

Students have also started using Times Tables Rock Stars to practise their multiplication facts. This engaging and interactive program provides repeated exposure to times table questions in a fun way, helping to build both speed and confidence. Students are encouraged to log in at home to continue strengthening their recall skills.

PYP – Where We Are in Place and Time

This week, we are excited to begin our new Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme Where We Are in Place and Time.

Our central idea for this unit is:

Exploration leads to discoveries, opportunities and new understandings.

Throughout this unit, students will explore the reasons behind British settlement in Australia and examine the impact this had from a range of perspectives. They will consider how exploration can create opportunities while also shaping experiences differently for different groups of people.

As part of their inquiry, students will research an individual connected to the First Fleet. They may choose to investigate the life of a captain, a settler, or a convict. Students will then present their findings in an oral presentation, sharing their understanding of that person’s experiences and contributions.

We look forward to seeing students develop their research skills, deepen their historical understanding, and confidently share their learning.
