Paramedic incursion:

Today our Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 students were very lucky to welcome Paramedic Bethany to our school!

Bethany read a wonderful story about a bear who hurt himself while playing on the slide at school. The story helped students think about what to do if someone gets hurt at school and how important it is to stay calm and get help from a trusted adult.

Students learned:

  • What to do if a friend is injured
  • How paramedics help people in an emergency
  • The emergency services number in Australia — 000
  • How to carefully bandage an arm using a splint

The hands-on demonstration was a highlight, with students learning how a splint helps keep an injured arm still and safe until medical help arrives.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to build their understanding of safety, community helpers and emergency procedures. A big thank you to Bethany for sharing her time and expertise with us!

We loved learning how to be safe and look after one another. Some of our students favourite parts of the incursion were....

Tida- When people call 000 they get the option to speak to paramedic, firefighters and police

Milan- I liked when they bandaged Vihaan

Kai- I learnt we call 000 for an emergency

Rosha- You can get emergency services by calling 000

Holly- When someone is not responding you can squeeze them

Harvey- You can shout 'WAKE UP' if someone is not responding

Grade 1/2

Morning Reading Routine:

Each morning begins with marking the roll and going over what’s ahead for the day. After that, students enjoy 20–30 minutes of dedicated reading time. They select a new reader and read aloud with their table buddy, taking turns to share and listen.

This routine gives students valuable practice in reading out loud while also developing their listening skills. Although students may be at different reading levels, this time encourages them to learn from one another, support each other, and build confidence together.

Students can further reinforce their learning at home by reading with their families and recording their reading in their home learning book. This partnership between school and home helps strengthen reading skills and fosters a love of learning.

Addition and subtraction in Maths:

Over the next few weeks, our mathematics learning will focus on developing strong addition and subtraction skills. Students will learn and strengthen their understanding of a range of supportive strategies, including the jump strategy, partitioning, subitising, recognising “friends of 10,” and doubles. These strategies help students build flexibility and confidence when working with numbers.

Hands-on materials such as number lines, counters, tens frames, and number charts are used regularly to support understanding and make learning more concrete and meaningful.

Each maths lesson begins with a fluency and retrieval warm-up. This short series of questions helps students revisit previously taught concepts and strengthen their recall. Following this, a whole-class mini lesson introduces a new concept or strategy.

Students then work in small, targeted groups to complete activities suited to their learning level. Throughout the week, students rotate through a range of learning experiences, including a teacher-led clinic session, a maths game, and an independent activity. These opportunities allow students to practise skills in different ways while receiving support and feedback.

Working with peers of similar ability also gives students the chance to support one another, share strategies, and build confidence together as learners.

Foundation

This week the foundation students had an incursion run by Responsible Pet Education.  Tracie and her dog Benson were our amazing presenters and taught us so much.  We learnt about how to read dog's body language and how to respond if we are spot an aggressive dog.   If we are at a park and see a happy dog with their owner, we know to approach the owner and ask if it is ok to pat the dog.  We must let the dog sniff our hand first and pat it slowly along its back.   The students were all brave and had a turn meeting Benson.

A few important reminders:

  • Our term newsletters have now gone home. This covers what we are teaching in the classroom this term, how you can support your child through Home Learning and important dates. If you have not received a copy please see your child's teacher.
  • Foundation and Grade 1/2- Our Home Learning program has commenced. Please ensure Home Learning books are sent to school each day.
  • Monday 9th Public Holiday- No school

We are looking forward a wonderful year together!
