Grade 1 News

Good afternoon Grade 1 Families,

We are so pleased to see how beautifully our students have settled into their new classrooms! Across the Grade 1 cohort we have seen phenomenal examples of hard work, resilience, kindness, and dedication. Thank you so much for all the support you have given your child and the school in building such a great foundation to the school year.

Classroom Snapshot

English

We have been learning the long vowel sounds of /ay/, /ee/, /igh/, and /oa/. Our students have worked so hard in reading and writing words with these sounds and we are so impressed with their progress. Additionally, we have been working on sentence level writing and discussing how to make our work more interesting. Students have begun to touch on adjectives and use alliteration... wow!

Maths

In Maths, we have been looking at place value and understanding how numbers can be partitioned into tens and ones. Our students have loved making bundles, towers of ten, and filling tens frames to build numbers up to 100.

Humanities

We have worked hard the last few weeks developing our understanding of local places, maps, and natural vs constructed features. Our students have done school walks to identify key features of our school and have even had a go creating a birds-eye-view map of our classroom!

SEL

Over the last four weeks, our focus for Social and Emotional learning has been to build our classroom community. We have played team building games, discussed how to be kind, and really delved into our school values of community, excellence, integrity, and happiness.

Reminders

  • Please label all items of school uniform to ensure a safe return if they are lost

  • Hats that cover your child's face, neck and ears are required this term, so please your child has one

  • Home reading is beginning next week - please ensure your child brings their blue reader satchel and diary to school each day

  • Please send all fruit snack in an individual container separate to the lunchbox, this is to allow it to be placed on the students' desks throughout the day without taking up too much room. Additionally, please ensure it is easily eaten (e.g. cut up and peeled) and any required cutlery is provided

Have a lovely weekend,

The Grade 1 Team
