Year Five/Six News

The Senior Learning Centre have had a busy week of learning!

In Reading, students are revisiting how to take meaningful tracks about texts they are reading. They are identifying text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections to better understand the texts that they are reading. Our focus text has been ‘The Watertower’ which has sparked lots of conversation about the meaning of the text and the author's purpose.

In Writing, students are strengthening their narrative skills by focusing on “show, don’t tell.” Rather than stating emotions directly, they are using descriptive language, dialogue, and body language to reveal how characters feel. Instead of writing, “She was nervous,” students might describe trembling hands or a shaky voice. This technique makes their writing more engaging and helps readers visualise what is happening in their story.

In Maths, students are revising their understanding of telling the time. They are confidently reading analogue and digital clocks, converting between 12- and 24-hour time, and solving real-world elapsed time problems.

In Humanities, students are exploring the concept of urbanisation and examining why populations shift from rural areas to cities. They are investigating the social, economic, and environmental impacts of urban growth, including housing, infrastructure, and sustainability.

Reminder: can we please ask that all students have Google Classroom and Google Docs downloaded onto their IPADS to support classroom learning.
