Article by Natalie Miller, Year 5 Leader

Year 5 students, teachers and College Leadership Team members were recently welcomed to Wurundjeri Country through a meaningful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Wurundjeri Indigenous educator, Thane Garvey, from the Wurundjeri Land Council.

Thane shared his knowledge and experiences, introducing students to the history, traditions and ongoing connection of the Wurundjeri people to the land. The Smoking Ceremony, a significant cultural practice, involved the use of smoke to cleanse the space and welcome participants, symbolising respect, reflection and unity. The experience provided a powerful and memorable opportunity for students to engage with an important cultural tradition and to reflect on the significance of caring for Country.

Following the ceremony, educators continued to deepen students’ understanding of Indigenous culture by sharing a range of artefacts and stories. Students learned about their purpose, meaning and role in daily life, while also exploring broader aspects of Aboriginal culture, traditions and ways of knowing. These hands-on experiences encouraged curiosity, discussion and a deeper appreciation of Australia’s First Nations peoples, supporting ongoing learning and respect for Indigenous culture.
