PREPS 2026

What a wonderful first day for our new Preps!

We have welcomed our newest students as they began their school journey, and they did an amazing job settling in, making new friends and exploring their classrooms. We are so proud of how brave and enthusiastic they were. We can’t wait to watch them grow and learn throughout the year ahead!

SENIOR CAMP

Our Year 11 and 12 students travelled to Melbourne from Thursday 29th – Friday 30th January for their Senior Camp, which provided a valuable opportunity to explore pathways beyond secondary school while building independence and teamwork.

A highlight of the camp was visiting both RMIT University and the University of Melbourne. Students were given guided tours of the campuses, learning spaces and student facilities, and were able to experience what university life is really like. They gained insight into course options, entry pathways, accommodation and support services, helping them better understand the many possibilities available after finishing school. For many students, this was their first time on a university campus and it was a fantastic chance to begin thinking seriously about future study and career goals.

Students also participated in an industry tour of the Port of Melbourne, where they discovered the wide range of careers involved in shipping, logistics, engineering, trade and business operations. The visit highlighted how many different jobs contribute to keeping Australia’s largest container port running and helped students see real-world applications of their studies.

In addition to the educational experiences, students enjoyed a range of team-building activities, including an “Amazing Race” challenge around the city that required communication, problem-solving and cooperation. They also had time to explore Melbourne and take part in some fun recreational activities together.

Overall, the camp was a fantastic opportunity for students to broaden their horizons, strengthen friendships and gain confidence as they prepare for life after school. We commend our students for their positive behaviour and willingness to step outside their comfort zones, and we thank the staff who supported and supervised the camp.

Year 5 & 6 Melbourne Camp

Last week our Year 5 and 6 students headed off on their Melbourne Camp, beginning with an early morning start to catch the train into the city. The excitement was high as students experienced public transport and the busy pace of Melbourne life — a big adventure for many!

Throughout the camp, students took part in a range of educational and engaging activities. They enjoyed a guided tour of the MCG where they learnt about the history of Australian sport and the importance of the stadium to our national culture. At the Queen Victoria Market students explored the different stalls and experienced the vibrant atmosphere of one of Melbourne’s most iconic locations.

The group also visited the State Library of Victoria, where they discovered historic collections and impressive reading rooms, and the Old Melbourne Gaol where students learnt about life in colonial times and some of Melbourne’s most famous historical figures. A tour through Parliament House gave students an insight into how laws are made and the role government plays in our community.

Of course, a favourite for many was the visit to the Melbourne Zoo, where students were able to see a wide range of animals up close while learning about conservation and habitats from around the world.

The camp provided a wonderful opportunity for students to build independence, practise responsibility and strengthen friendships, while experiencing many important historical, cultural and educational sites. All students represented Mortlake College exceptionally well, showing positive behaviour and excellent manners throughout the trip.

We thank the staff who gave their time to organise and supervise the camp, and we hope students will remember this fantastic experience for years to come.

Crazy Ideas College Incursion — Future-Focused Learning at Mortlake College

On Wednesday 4 February, Mortlake P-12 College hosted a full-day incursion delivered by Crazy Ideas College (CIC) in partnership with Moyne Shire Council and Origin Energy.

The incursion provided students across Years 7–10 and VCE VM with engaging, future-focused learning experiences designed to build career awareness, digital capability and confidence in navigating the changing world of work.

The program consisted of two complementary workshops — Future Ready and Cyber Lab — each aligned to curriculum priorities and tailored to specific year levels.

The Cyber Lab workshop was completed by Year 7–10 Digital Technologies classes and encouraged students to think critically about their technology use, digital presence and online behaviour. Students explored cyber safety, responsible decision-making and the long-term impact of their online actions.

The Future Ready workshop was delivered to all Year 9–10 and VCE VM students and supported career exploration, emerging industries and pathway planning. Students investigated workplace skills, employability capabilities and the opportunities that exist in a rapidly changing workforce.

The Crazy Ideas College incursion was very well received by both students and staff. Students demonstrated high levels of engagement and participation across both workshops and benefited from the practical and relevant focus of the sessions.

Mortlake College would like to thank Crazy Ideas College, Moyne Shire Council and Origin Energy for supporting this valuable learning opportunity for our students.
