Year 3

Term 1, Week 9!
It has been a very busy time in Year 3. My how the weeks are flying by!
We congratulate Mr Linc and Mrs Ali McKernan on the occasion of their wedding over the weekend.
We have been settling into school routines and expectations of Year 3.
We have celebrated Harmony Day, this day allowed us to discuss and connect some of the general things we have been learning about. We looked at our emotions and feelings, how to build positive relationships, how to sort out things when they don't go so well.
We have introduced the Fill My Bucket strategy to assist students to identify and acknowledge positive behaviours in each other.
We modelled ways to follow school expectations, how to be a supportive, positive classmate using kind words and actions. We hope you enjoy our photos!
Literacy - Explanations
We have started a new book by the wonderful author illustrator Roland Harvey. We can all relate to sharing holiday experiences, somewhere in our state or country. This is such a conversation starter - retelling holiday adventures and misadventures.
Writing using the features and structures of an explanation is not as easy as retelling.
The SpellEx program is well underway, and students are becoming familiar with using their workbook each day.
Mathematics - Arrays
We are working on multiplication and division. Using arrays to represent the relationships between creating groups and sharing items. We can show multiplication and division facts.
How many ways can you design a garden bed of 20 plants using arrays?
Now try different plantings, 32 plants etc.
Basic number facts, and reading, writing and showing models for 6-digit numbers continue to be practised each day in daily review.
Religious Education - Holy Week
Lent continues for two more weeks with students being encouraged to pray, give or give up something for Lent.
During the next two weeks students will explore the key events of Holy Week — Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. Through discussion and visual examples, they learn the significance of each event and how these moments together tell the story of Jesus’ final days, death, and resurrection.
Inquiry: Geography - Features of Australia
We have made links in from our novel study by looking at Google maps, finding our own address, locating the states and territories, capital cities and places of interest, then labelling our own map of Australia.
NAPLAN
Year 3 students had their first experience of NAPLAN. The emphasis is on doing our best! We know that during the assessments the questions will have a variety of easy, tricky and quite difficult questions. The purpose of the assessments is to find out what I can and can't do. Photos shown concentrating and doing our best, and celebrating that it's over!
