Year 6 News by Paige Enright and April Clarke
English
In English we have been learning the suffixes -ity -ty -ify -fy and have been reading the Silver Donkey. The Silver Donkey is set in World War One and two little sisters find a blind soldier and decide to help him cross the English Channel. In this story, the soldier tells the sisters fables about a silver donkey that is kind and persistent. We are writing fables with morals that teach you to be a better person.
Maths
Over the past 2 weeks we have been learning about the order of operations /BODMAS (brackets, order, division, multiplication, addition, subtraction). We use BODMAS when calculating large number problems. While using BODMAS we have had the fun challenge of designing a budget for a school disco with the help of a spreadsheet on our laptops.
Science
In the past 2 weeks we have been learning about solids, liquids and gases. We have also made Oobleck. Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid that has properties of solids and liquids depending on the force you apply to it. It was a fun and entertaining project to work on.
Religious Education
In RE the Year 6 students have been creating a poster about darkness and light for Lent. Lent is a time we prepare for Easter and give up something that we like but can live without like chocolate. Lent is a time for fasting, almsgiving and prayer.
Caritas Zoom call with Moronjon from Bangladesh
As a part of R.E we had called a Caritas member on Zoom and we talked about how Caritas helps people like Moronjon all over the world. Moronjon is a father to 3 children and was in poverty but with the help of Caritas 'help them help themselves' program they are back on their feet. Moronjon is now living happily with farming and crab fishing as his food and income.
Specialist Timetable
PE and Art are on a Tuesday this term, and Japanese and STEM are on a Wednesday.
Buddy Program
As year six students, we start the Buddy program, each student has been given a Foundation student to take care of, help and be friendly to each other.
On St. Patrick’s Day we rotated through 3 activities with our buddies. The activities were a St Patrick’s Day hat, sports activities and shamrock making. This was a fun way to get to know our buddies a bit more and everyone enjoyed the day.
Euroa S.C Visit to St. John's
Former students from St John’s (that now attend Euroa Secondary College) along with Mr. Lawson came and visited the Year 6 students. They told us about the daily life of a high school student and the opportunities the secondary college has to offer like sport, camps, music and more. They let us write a letter to our older selves to tell us that it will be something to look forward to.
Tree Planting with Ray Thomas
The year 6 students planted trees to go around Castle Creek and the Seven’s Creek. It was a great experience for the students to know how to properly plant a tree and how to look after the environment. Ray was a great teacher and taught us how to plant trees, so they grow in the correct way.
FIRE Carrier Program
FIRE Carriers is a program where you bring awareness to the importance of Indigenous Culture. In year 6 anyone can become a FIRE carrier. The year 6 students recently planted lots of trees in the brand-new Indigenous Garden with the help of landscaper Chris Welsh. We planted these trees on the 25th of February and they are looking amazing. The whole school is loving the new garden, and we believe it is a great addition to our beautiful school.
Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships (RRRR)
In RRRR we learn about personal and cultural strengths. We have been learning how to control our emotions and that we can feel more than one emotion at a time. We also learn about situations that can start off as a bad situation but end in a great life lesson. We also learn about respect and responsibility.
World Day of Prayer
On the World Day of Prayer, we went to the Anglican church in Euroa, and some peope from Nigeria were there to host the mass. There were 3 stories about 3 different women from Nigeria. The stories were inspiring and heartwarming and it really made us all stop and think.
