Year 4
Spotlight on Learning
Jericho Community
Dear Families,
Year 4 students participated in a Prayer Service for Ash Wednesday to mark the beginning of Lent. During the service, we reflected on the Catholic purpose of Lent a time for prayer, reflection, and acts of charity and considered ways we can grow closer to God and show kindness to others. Thank you to all families who attended Open Night; it was wonderful to meet you and explore the learning planned for the year ahead.
Our Learning this week:
Religious Education:
In Religious Education, students learned that Lent is a time of renewal and hope as we prepare for Easter. They explored what Lent means and identified that it is a special time in the Church year that lasts for 40 days before Easter. Students discussed ways people can grow during Lent through prayer, kindness, and helping others, and reflected on how they can show these values in their daily lives.

English
In Reading, students are focusing on text-level reading skills through our class novel Kensuke’s Kingdom. Our focus is for students to read accurately, quickly, and with appropriate expression, building their reading fluency. Students are also developing their vocabulary, learning to use and understand new words from the novel in discussions and written responses. In Writing, students are learning to write a persuasive text, aiming to convince the reader of their opinion using clear arguments supported by factual evidence and detailed examples.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students are learning to use the commutative property of addition, which means numbers can be added in any order and still give the same total. Students demonstrated this concept using concrete materials, such as counters and blocks, to show that 3 + 5 is the same as 5 + 3. They also practised identifying unknown values in addition equations by using the commutative property, helping them to develop flexible thinking and stronger problem solving skills.
Integrated Studies
In Integrated Studies, students learned how climate helps explain why places are different around the world. They identified climate as an important reason why environments, landscapes, and living conditions vary between places. Students also explained how climate influences how people live, including the types of homes they build, the clothes they wear, and the activities they do. This learning helped students make connections between geography and everyday life.
Social Emotional Learning
In Social and Emotional Learning, students are learning to name and recognise a range of emotions and describe how their bodies might feel in response to different feelings, such as excitement, worry, or anger. They explored how body language and facial expressions can give clues about how someone is feeling and discussed why it is important to notice these signs. Students also practised using kind and respectful words to ask others how they are feeling, helping them to build empathy, communication skills, and positive relationships with their peers.
Auslan
In Auslan, students are learning that question signs are commonly placed at the end of a sentence, helping them to understand and form questions correctly when communicating in Auslan.

Important Reminders:
We kindly ask families to return all swimming program forms as soon as possible to assist with planning and organisation.
