Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

Welcome to Week Four! How quickly this term is moving. Thank you to all of the families who attended the Open Afternoon on Thursday evening. It was great to meet so many of you and show you around our learning community. For those who were unable to attend, the presentation will be shared with you. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Friendly Reminder:  Please ensure your child is in the correct school uniform and has their name on items that come off and on during the day. This includes jumpers and jackets. We have a lot of lost property at school to check if needed.

Health Reminder: To help keep all of our students and staff healthy, we kindly ask that children who are unwell remain at home to rest and recover. If your child has vomited or had dirrhea, please ensure they stay home for at least 24 hours after the last episode before returning to school. This helps prevent the spread of illness within our community. Thank you for your support in keeping everyone safe and well.

If your child has any sort of medical condition please ensure that you have updated the school and the class teacher.

This week we learnt about:

Religious Education: In Religious Education, students have been learning about Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, and their importance in the Church calendar. We discussed how Shrove Tuesday is a time of preparation before Lent, and how Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this special season of reflection and kindness.

Students have also been exploring the colours of the liturgical year and what they represent, such as purple for preparation, green for growth, white for celebration and red for the Holy Spirit.

Mathematics: In Mathematics, we have begun exploring number lines and learning about their key features, including starting points, intervals and equal spacing. Students have been practising ordering three-digit numbers on a number line and using their understanding of place value to position numbers accurately. We have also been identifying and completing missing numbers on number charts to strengthen number sequencing and pattern recognition skills.

Structured Literacy:  In Literacy, we have been reading Under the Southern Cross and exploring the rich language and themes within the text. Students have been making connections to the story and using it as inspiration for their own writing. Our writing tasks are linked closely to the book, allowing students to build their vocabulary, describe settings and ideas in detail, and express their understanding of the text creatively.

Auslan: In Auslan we are relflecting on the learning we have done so far this term. We love playing games to practise our signs.

Social & Emotional Learning: In SEL, students are learning to identify experiences and situations that can trigger different emotions. Through discussions and activities, they are building their emotional awareness and developing the language to describe how they feel. This helps students better understand themselves and respond to their emotions in positive and healthy ways.

Integrated Studies: In Integrated Studies, we are learning about how the Bunurong land has changed over time. Students are exploring what the local area may have looked like in the past and how natural and human influences have shaped it. Through this learning, we are building an understanding of the history of the land and developing respect for the Bunurong people as the Traditional Custodians.

How you can support at home:

Families play an important role in supporting learning at school, and there are many simple ways you can help at home.

  • Ask your child to tell you about the book we read this week. You can read the book together (below)
  • Ask your child to tell you what they learnt about number lines
  • Read with your child and ask them questions about the book
  • Practise handwriting, using upper case and lower case correctly

These small, regular conversations help build confidence and reinforce learning in a meaningful way.
