School Reminders

Staying Safe Around Schools

Whittlesea Primary School is situated at the corner of a major intersection and is supported by crossing supervisors each morning and afternoon. There are several things you can do to keep yourself and your family safe when driving or walking near school.

These include:

  • supervising your children in or near traffic
  • walking or cycling to school with your child
  • if your child is cycling or scooting, wear a helmet
  • respecting all road rules, parking signs and instructions from authorities
  • waiting on the same side of the street as your child
  • always letting your child out on the kerb side of the car
  • paying attention to the road rules and any signage
  • think about walking, cycling or scooting to school to reduce traffic, but be aware of cars on the roads and near schools.

If your child walks, rides, or scoots to school independently, please remind them about road safety and the expectations at supervised crossings.

These include:

  • following the directions given by the crossing supervisor
  • waiting for the whistle and green 'walk' signal before crossing
  • walking across the road, including walking bikes and scooters (not riding)
  • holding onto balls so they do not bounce out into traffic
  • walking between the lines.

E-Scooters

In Victoria, your child must be 16 years or older to legally ride an e-scooter. This rule applies to both privately owned e-scooters and rental e-scooters. These laws are in place to help keep young people and the community safe.

What you must do

E-scooter riders must:

  • be aged 16 or over
  • wear a helmet
  • ride at no more than 20 km/h
  • ride on:
    • shared-use paths
    • bicycle paths
    • roads with a speed limit of up to 60 km/h
  • Use flashing or steady front and rear lights, if riding at night or in low light
  • Park responsibly in a location that does not disrupt pedestrians or pose a safety hazard
  • Stay within approved areas when using a hired e-scooter.
