Year 2 News

Welcome back for another exciting year of learning!

We hope all families had a wonderful break and a fantastic start to the school year.

What’s been happening in Grade 2 recently?

As inquirers and learners, we have been focused on “learning to learn”, and have been busy establishing our classroom routines, expectations and exploring our school’s Agreed Ways.

As faith-filled people, we have been exploring what prayer means to us and developing our own classroom prayer and prayer mat for our spaces.

As mathematicians, we have been collecting and representing data about our class. Together, we have created graphs representing our birthdays and eye colour, and making statements about the information we gathered.

As readers and writers, we have been using our experiences over the holidays and on our weekends to practice our recount writing, incorporating relevant vocabulary and sequencing language. In spelling, we did a great job learning our first Smart Spelling words in Week 2, focusing on the digraph /ai/ making the sound “A” as in snail. In reading, we have been building our stamina with independent reading and discussing our favourite books.

As learners beyond the classroom, we have been doing an excellent job each day of changing over our home readers, recording our reading in our diaries and practicing our Smart Spelling words. Thank you for helping your children with this and building those routines at home. Please note, take home readers are purposefully levelled to allow students to practise reading with confidence, while developing fluency and comprehension.

This week, we will be learning about:

  • Numeracy: Place value
  • Reading: Predicting and making connections
  • Spelling: The digraph /ur/, making the sound "er" as in fur
  • Writing: Writing recounts and using colourful semantics
  • Inquiry: Zones of Regulation and Class Charter
  • Religion: Class prayer and prayer mat

A reminder to families to please bring in 2 boxes of tissues for their classroom.

We look forward to seeing you all this week at the meet and greet sessions. If you are unable to attend or need to schedule an alternative time, please contact us at nascenzo@sfmoreland.catholic.edu.aushogan@sfmoreland.catholic.edu.au.

Have a great week!
