Year 1 News

Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been very exciting in Year 1 over the last couple of weeks, as we all returned from our break ready for a new year of amazing learning opportunities and experiences. There were smiles, laughter and lots of excitement as we joyfully reunited with our friends, peers and teachers! We unpacked our bags and engaged in various puzzles, games and activities, whilst catching up and sharing our summer adventures. We also welcome three new students to Year 1…Alexander B, Rumi and Alexander S!
Week 3 is already underway and we’ve jumped straight into routines with enthusiasm and curiosity. We have already begun exploring new literacy and numeracy concepts, whilst building friendships and settling beautifully into our new learning spaces.
As learners and inquirers, we have been ‘Learning to Learn’, focusing on our big question ‘How do we learn and achieve success together?” As thinkers, we unpacked our daily routines and the Agreed Ways and expectations, discussing what they look like, sound like and feel like. We explored ways to be respectful, responsible, happy and safe members of our learning community. As a Year 1 learning community, we went through the Morning Routine and Learning Hum, and as collaborators, we worked together to create a Class Charter. We read the story, ‘Our Class is a Family‘ and made connections. We discussed how we want to treat each other and how we want our learning space to feel, and came up with a set of promises that we agree to follow.
As members of a Catholic community, we revisited Prayer, and what it looks like, sounds like and feels like. As communicators, we activated our prior knowledge and shared our thinking about why we engage in prayer and how we engage in prayer. We then created our class prayer cloths. This week, we will collaborate to compose our own class prayers that we can use in our learning spaces, at Whole School Prayer, at home or during Mass.
As readers, we are revising the learnt sounds, digraphs and concepts from Initialit F, as we begin Initialit 1. Each week, we will include the different letter sound combinations that we are learning in this newsletter, so that they can be consolidated at home. Don’t forget to engage in reading at home each night. Library will begin this week, and take-home texts will begin in Week 5.
This week, we will be learning about…
- Numeracy: Collecting, sorting and representing Data
- Reading: Sequencing and Retelling
- InitiaLit: Revising learnt sounds and digraphs and building, reading and spelling words and sentences (Learnt sounds: m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r, c, o, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck, ll, ff, ss, sh, qu, ee, z, zz, ch, v, x, th, wh, y, ng, oo, ay)
- Writing: Parts of a Sentence/Colourful Semantics
- Inquiry: Zones of Regulation and Child Safety
- Religion: Writing class prayers
It has been a wonderful start to the year in 1AM, 1OB AND 1CW, and we look forward to whatever 2026 may bring. See you all at the Meet and Greets this week!
Year 1 Team,
Alycia Marsico, Chloe Wang, Olivia Bovolato
