BAKING COMPETITION
The Friday Crew, as I affectionately call them, are a bunch of great VCE VM students who are seeking a workplacement, and currently attend lessons at Nazareth on a Friday to build their work and personal skills.
With Valentines Day ahead, a team task was undertaken whereby students produced a focaccia decorated in a whimsical or romantic style. Mr Brusco, the Focaccia King, gave teams useful tips about creating a yeasty dough early in the day, leaving plenty of time for it to rise and create the thick crusty on the outside, spongey on the inside bread.
Great team work was displayed, with outstanding leadership demonstrated by Christian (12B). Giselle and Brianna were noted for their fantastic inclusive spirit in inviting others to join their team.
Mr Duckett and Mr Brusco judged the finished product, using artistic design and bread form as the criterion.
Congratulations to Christian and Thanuga - Overall Focaccia Champions.
In Second Place with honorable mention for their creativity, Shania, Giselle and Brianna.
PRACTICAL NUMERACY SKILLS AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT
The VCE VM students once again excelled in welcoming our Year 7 students by producing shortbread biscuit packets - six biscuits, each biscuit representing a year at Nazareth College.
The students had to calculate the number of biscuits that they needed to produce, the amounts of each ingredient that needed to be purchased and the total cost.
By working together, both Year 11 and 12 VM students produced more than 1500 biscuits in two days. Their effort, commitment to the project and collaboration was exemplary.
VM students made enough packets for all the Year 7 students, the Pastoral Teachers and Heads of House. We wanted to express our gratitude to the pastoral staff for their tireless efforts in making sure that all these young boys and girls feel supported and welcomed.
CERTIFICATE III IN BEAUTY SERVICES
Week 1 and 2 has our Beauty students learning how to safely use PPE and an introduction to providing a manicure treatment. It was great to witness such enthusiasm and interest!
SHROVE TUESDAY AND AN OPPORTUNITY FOR LEARNING
It is always good to relate learning to our Christian values and practices. In keeping with Catholic tradition in the lead up to Lent, VCE Vocational Major students used Shrove Tuesday to clear out the Joseph Centre's kitchen pantry of staple ingredients.
As many people refrain from food indulgences across the 40 days of Lent, our students made an array of pancakes to compare texture, consistency, taste and overall preference. This served as a reminder to refrain as much as possible from food delicacies from Ash Wednesday to Easter. Students also discussed the modern practice of replacing sacrifice with action, consciously doing something for others across Lent.
Great teamwork, safe use of tools and equipment, and correct food handling practices were observed.
And to our parents - adolescents CAN capably cook, clean up, use a washing machine, and fold washing!!!
