Student Representative Council (SRC)

How & why we randomise it!

Here at NPS we see the SRC differently to the Leadership roles. We aim to make the SRC representative of the diversity of students - like a Citizens' Assembly or a jury. Often schools find that the SRC is usually made up of students who are the most popular or most confident  (or the one who writes the best speeches) as they get voted in by other students. That means that we don't hear enough from students with different experiences and different perspectives, and how can we make improvements to the school for everyone if we don't understand or hear from a diverse range of students?

So, for the SRC at NPS, we do a randomised selection.

1) Nominate - All students have the chance to nominate themselves as their double class's representative except students from Foundation and Year 1 (SRC is from Year 2 upwards).

2) Screen - Nominations are then screened to remove any nominations that don't meet the minimum requirement (eg remove any students who haven't ticked all boxes confirming commitment, showing the school values, and attending all meetings when present at school - see the photo above). Sensible forms are then folded in half and returned to their class's folder.

3) Randomly select - The next step is to randomly select the rep. This year it was done in one of two ways: lucky dip from the folder, or by throwing the nomination slips into the air then catching just one at random. Last year's SRC helped me with the process this week. Here they are in the act!
