Ride to School - La Vuelta de Newlands

Friday 20th March
As always, we will celebrate national Ride2School Day, but this time we're renaming it at NPS as "La Vuelta de Newlands"
Students are encouraged to ride their own bike to school that day. A scooter is acceptable, as is walking, if need be.
Why? To celebrate and enjoy the positive effects on our wellbeing that active transport has! It's also healthier for our environment.
What do you need to do at home now?
- SAFETY - Start fixing and repairing your bikes or scooters, so that they're in a safe, working condition. Check your helmets, too!
- DECORATIONS - Decorate your bikes! We encourage you and your child to think about the colour of the House that they're in, and/or colours or themes from Spanish speaking countries. There will be prizes - read about these in the FAQ section below.
- PRACTICE - support your child to build up their safe riding skills if need be, and think about the safest route.
On the day - Friday 20th March
- 8:45 - 8:57
- Grades 1-6 students will initially park their bikes in in designated spots for each House on the bottom oval. See the House signs, but ignore the class signs for now.
- Foundation students will park their bikes in classes on the bottom fence. Follow the signs!
- 8:57 Students will then leave their bikes while they drop their bags off outside their classroom.
- Foundation students will then line up outside their classroom, while all other year levels will return to the bottom oval.
From 9:00 onwards
- House laps - Each House will do a lap of the route, then park their bikes in classes.
- Class laps - Once each House has done a lap, then each class will do a lap and park their bikes in their designated class parking spot.
- Grades 1/2 and 3/4 will return to their classes.
Foundation students will be collected from their classroom to ride their lap once everyone else has finished. This will ensure a safer, calmer environment for them. They will do this with their Year 5/6 buddies walking/jogging alongside them.
2:50/3:00pm - In assembly, awards will be announced for the best decorated bikes as judged by our Health & Movement Leaders and our House Leaders.
3:30 - Please collect bikes and scooters, and take them home! There aren't enough places to lock up everyone's bikes; so, whilst the school gets locked up each night, we can't guarantee the safety of your wheels!
We need helpers! Can you help?
- Tasks that we need help with on the day include:
- Start and finish line support - managing lots of students!
- Marshalling at strategic spots
- Supervising off-bike areas to ensure safety
- Helping out with tyres and brakes that need last minute adjustments!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Q: I live too far away for my child to ride/scoot/walk the whole way.
- A: Could you instead park a few blocks away and ride/scoot the last few blocks to school? Otherwise, as a last resort, bring their bike in the car.
- Q: How are the bikes judged?
- A: Our student leaders will develop categories and criteria. Whilst our student leaders take their roles and responsibilities really seriously, there is a subjective element to the judging, so please talk with your child about not taking it too seriously - just have fun!
- Q: My child has Before or After Care that day!
- A: OSHC are aware of the event. If there aren't signs up early enough for your child to park their bike, they should park it close to OSHC and the oval, and there will be time for your child to move their bike before 9:00. When you collect your child from After Care, please take your bike or at least lock it up somewhere secure if need be.
