Principal's Message

Brock Wilson

Hello Roxburgh Homestead Community,

We’ve had a positive fortnight of learning here at Roxburgh Homestead Primary School. I’ve really enjoyed seeing our students ‘come out of their shells’ as they become comfortable in their new classrooms.

The Roxy Way

A large focus of our professional learning for our staff in Term 1 this year has been on learning about the most effective strategies teachers use to create the best learning environments for students. An important aspect of this work is teaching clear expectations for behaviours within the school. You can see this work unpacked and embedded within our RHPS SWPBS Matrix (below).

Through this approach, we are working with our staff to continually teach our children the expectations in all areas of the school and to provide positive reinforcement when our school values are shown. Rather than just correcting the ‘wrong’ behaviour, we promote a balanced approach of explicitly unpacking what is expected and acknowledging the students doing the right thing, alongside corrections when required.

You will also hear our staff refer to this positive behaviour as the ‘Roxy Way’. This idea refers to how we strive for our staff, students and families to interact with each other on our school grounds. Emphasising our school values, staff will be looking to affirm children who are showing respect, honesty, and pride in different contexts around the school. For specifics on this, have a look at our school matrix below.

School Review Update

As previously shared, our school is currently undertaking its four-year review. As is the case for all Victorian government schools, this process involves senior regional Department of Education staff observing classrooms and meeting with staff, students, and families to identify areas of strength and future opportunities for improvement. In the coming weeks, we will receive a detailed report outlining the panel’s findings. This will guide the development of our next Strategic Plan and help shape our priorities for the years ahead. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to our School Councillors who joined the review panel on 9 February and provided thoughtful feedback on the school’s progress over recent years.

Meet the Teacher

If you haven’t done so already, make sure you hop on to Compass to book in a time with your child’s classroom teacher at our upcoming Meet the Teacher Day on Wednesday the 25th of February. As a reminder, students are not required to attend school on this day except for their scheduled 15-minute face-to-face meeting.

This event presents a valuable opportunity for you to connect with your child's classroom teacher and specialist teachers to discuss important aspects such as:

- Your aspirations for your child

- Understanding them as a learner

- How they are adjusting to their new classroom and learning environment

- Their interests and strengths

We recommend reflecting on the above points before the event to help guide the conversation. We are eager to hear your insights and perspectives.

Learning About Other Cultures

Finally, in recognition of the rich cultural diversity within our school community, students will have opportunities throughout the year to learn about significant cultural and religious celebrations. In alignment with the Victorian Curriculum, events such as Easter, Eid and Diwali are acknowledged, and students who observe these occasions are warmly encouraged to share how their families celebrate. These experiences provide valuable opportunities for us to learn from one another and to deepen our understanding of the diverse traditions represented in our community. We ask families to support this learning by encouraging your child to show respect for all cultures and to take pride in their own cultural background. This term, key cultural celebration highlights will include our traditional Iftar Celebration and Easter Parade. Further details about these events will be shared in the coming weeks.

That’s all from me for another fortnight. Keep smiling!

Kind Regards,

Brock Wilson

Principal
