Gospel Reflection

John 11:1-45

In the last two weeks, we have seen Jesus show ‘signs’ of his identity, first to the woman at the well, then his power to recreate in healing the blind man, and today in his authority over death itself by ‘The Raising of Lazarus”. Mary and Martha call Jesus to Bethany, close to Jerusalem, to heal their brother. Jesus tells the disciples he will go to ‘awaken’ his friend, but they protest out of fear of the Jewish authorities, and that if Lazarus is merely sleeping, there is no need to go back to Judea. Jesus tells them, “Lazarus is dead”.  As he nears Bethany, he meets Martha, and tells her, “Your brother will rise again”. She thinks he means the Jewish belief in the general resurrection at the end of history. Jesus responds “No, I mean now! For I am the Resurrection and the Life”.  Deeply moved by the peoples distress the Gospel author tells us that “Jesus Wept”. Moving to the grave, he commands the stone to be rolled away and for Lazarus to come forth. Bandaged the man arises – and many Jews believe.

Lent's theme of gradual conversion reaches its crescendo in this story. Over Lent, Jesus has revealed himself slowly – first as a prophet providing living water, then as a healer, and now as the giver of life itself. In raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus embodies the retroactive power of God. The End of History – which is the resurrection – is taking place through Jesus here and now. Jesus explains for God death is just a type of sleep, from which He can awaken us at any moment.

This lordship over death does not impede Jesus from feeling real sorrow and compassion for Us. Jesus, presented as the mirror image of the creator, shows us that God is Love, in its most tender expression – both paternal and maternal. God is not the distant and unfeeling prime mover of antiquity, but a God of complete love and tenderness, who gives up his very self in solidarity with Us.

After revealing himself so completely to Martha as “the resurrection and the life” he asks, “do you believe?” It is a question Jesus also asks each one of us. Martha’s response is exemplary – “Yes Lord, I believe you are the Christ – The Son of God"
