Learning Reflection
📖 Literacy
Literature
This week, Grade 2 began our new literature unit, "The Shop Train." Which is a story that follows Rosie and her mum on their bumpy, rickety car ride to collect supplies from the train. In literature, we are also focusing on our sentence level writing skill. This week we have learnt about the four sentence types - statements, questions, commands, and exclamations - by identifying examples and writing our own. The students have also continued to develop their understanding of expanding simple sentences by adding prepositional phrases to tell us who/what, where, and when.
Preview - Over the next few weeks, we will continue to use our literature text, ‘The Shop Train’, to support the students to develop their comprehension of texts and their confidence to expand simple sentences to include prepositional phrases such as the who/what, where and when.
Word Work
Knowledge Rich
It has been a busy week in our Knowledge Rich unit! We’ve officially crossed the finish line of our latest topic, and the students have done a fantastic job connecting the dots between the places we live and the diverse people who make up our nation. We explored the different landscapes Australians call home. The students learned to distinguish between:
Cities & Suburbs: We discussed how lots of people live in apartments and work in the city, while suburbs have houses and more land, whilst still having easy access to city entertainment such as going to watch sporting events or visit museums.
Regional Towns: These are communities with lots of land and open space, they still have essential schools and healthcare services.
Rural Areas: We highlighted the importance of our rural communities even though the population is smaller, these are the hardworking areas that produce the bulk of the food on our tables!
The students also learnt about Australia as a multicultural country. We acknowledged Aboriginal people as the first people of this land. We learned about British settlers, Chinese immigrants who came in search of gold and refugees from Vietnam, the Middle East, and various African nations. We celebrated how these diverse backgrounds have woven together to create the Australia we know today.
To wrap everything up the students completed a unit assessment to show off their hard-earned knowledge. We also got creative by designing new Australian flags. These designs were inspired by what the students learnt about our multicultural country.
Ask your child tonight: “If you could live in a city apartment, a suburban house, or a rural area, which one would you choose and why?”
This week we have begun our next unit, Knowledge Rich unit, ‘Great Inventions’. The Grade 2 students have learnt about an inventor and an invention is and have explored how early Indigenous Australian inventions still influence us today. The students have also learnt about the evolution of transportation from ships to trucks.
Preview - Over the next fortnight we will continue our ‘Great Inventions’ Knowledge Rich unit by learning about how writing and the way that we communicate has changed over the years and how Australian inventions have helped the world (and even how toys have changed!), we’ll discover how these ideas revolutionized the way we live and communicate.
➗ Maths
Over the past fortnight, students have been learning to understand and use calendars. They have learned to identify days and dates on a calendar, and to identify how many days, weeks and months between dates. Additionally, they have been learning about categorical data. They have learned how to differentiate between categorical data and numerical data, and how to collect categorical data in a list. They then used their lists to create data tables.
In Week 8, we moved onto our Addition and Subtraction unit. Students have been learning to utilise a variety of strategies and resources to improve their computation skills in addition and subtraction. Students have been learning to add and subtract by bridging on a tens frame.
Additionally, the skill of bridging ten when adding and subtracting was exposed to students using number lines.
Preview - Over the next fortnight, students will complete their addition and subtraction unit, covering the following topics:
- Adding one digit numbers to two digit numbers
- Subtracting one digit numbers from two digit numbers
- Adding multiples of 10 within 100
- Adding two digit numbers by partitioning into tens and ones
- Subtracting multiples of 10 within 100
- Subtracting two digit numbers by partitioning into tens and ones
😊 Wellbeing
Over the past fortnight, Grade 2 students have been learning about Friendship Fires and how to put them out when problems arise between friends. They explored how a Friendship Fire can represent hurt feelings, misunderstandings, or disagreements, and discussed how conflicts can happen in friendships.
Students learned that solving problems with friends is a cycle and practised the Friendology “How to Talk It Out” process. Through role-playing real-life scenarios with their peers, students practised using positive reactions and respectful communication to solve problems.
Throughout these activities, students were reminded to “talk it out until the fire is out!” They also reflected on the idea that while they cannot control others, they can control their own actions and responses when challenges arise in friendships.
We also had Circles! In this time students shared their ideas and listened to others respectfully. The groups had a rich discussion about Harmony Day and explored how we can recognise and celebrate different cultures in our community. As part of this learning, students completed a self-portrait activity showing where their families are from, which will contribute to a whole-school display celebrating the diverse cultures within our school community.
Curious Corner!
Grade 2’s have also spent time in the Curious Corner exploring their interests whilst practising our LPS values by working together as a team, showing respect for each other’s ideas and the equipment. They also show kindness and a strong sense of community while aspiring to learn more through curiosity and collaboration.
Preview - In Week 9, students will explore tricky friendship situations and practise respectful ways to communicate, include others, and seek support when needed.
