Business Fair for Charity
From Ideas to Enterprise

Matthew Lynch
Teacher - Year 10 Commerce
The Year 10 Commerce class ran a Business Fair for Charity on Friday 1st May in the A block courtyard at lunchtime.
In groups, the students had used their entrepreneurial skills to choose a product to make, advertise and then sell to the school community. Stalls sold products such as sausages, cakes, cookies, Malaysian pineapple tarts, spinach and fetta triangles and Bahn mi. It was a challenging undertaking which proved very successful and lots of fun for all the participants!
The advertising material which had been put up around the school generated lots of expectation and interest. The courtyard filled quickly with students from all year levels keen to see what was on sale. There was a buzz and a real market vibe as sellers sold to grateful customers and most of the stalls were sold out by the end of lunchtime!
Student comments included:
“Very successful!"
“A good opportunity to learn how to handle money and manage inventory.”
“I enjoyed the selling part…..bartering with the customers was fun.”
“What I learned from the Business Fair is to never do anything in the last minute."
“What we enjoyed about the Business Fair was cooking the food together for the Bake Sale.”
“I enjoyed the Business Fair because it was a new experience for me.”
The Year 10 Commerce class demonstrated great entrepreneurial flair, teamwork and planning skills. Most groups did make a profit at the fair which they donated to Dolly’s Dream. This charity was chosen by the group that had made the largest profit on the day – Jazel Kassab, Angel-Rose Lagowski, Nolitha Mafani and Ella Pagliaro.

The total donation of $509-10 generated by the Commerce students was a great result!
A big thank you to Bernie for setting up the trestle tables and BBQ for the students.
