Teacher - Science

Dissecting a sheep heart is a really engaging way for Year 8 students to learn about how the heart works. While diagrams or videos are useful, getting to see and handle a real heart helps bring the science to life and makes it much easier to understand.

Students also developed practical science skills, including careful observation, following instructions and handling equipment safely. Using scalpels, they explored the heart by cutting into the muscle to locate key structures such as the valves, chambers and major blood vessels, and to trace the pathway of blood through the heart. Sheep hearts are quite similar to human hearts, so it was s a great way for them to learn about their own bodies in a real and meaningful way.

It was also a chance for students to build practical science skills, like observing closely, following instructions and working carefully with equipment. For many students, this type of practical learning activity sparks curiosity and helps them make stronger connections between what they’re learning and real life.

Overall, the Year 8 students enjoyed a memorable, hands-on experience that has helped them to better understand the body, and makes science more interesting and relevant.
