Celebration of Maths

In recent weeks, there have been some exciting Mathematics events, including International Day of Mathematics and World Maths Day. Inspired by these events, we took the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the wonderful Mathematical learning and activities happening here at Sacred Heart Kew.

On Tuesday 24th March, an announcement was made for students to “Stop, Stop, Ready, Set, Solve” and students did just that! Students enthusiastically engaged in a variety of fun and challenging mathematical games and activities. It was fantastic to see students of all year levels actively involved, supporting one another and enjoying mathematics in a fun and meaningful way.

A big thank you to all staff, in particular Miss Bilney (Maths Leader) and students, for making this celebration such a success.

The games the students participated in were:

Prep Last One Standing - Number Identification to 20
Year 1 and 2Race to 50 - Addition
Year 3 Race to 100 - Addition and Multiplication
Year 4 Celebrity Heads - Times Tables

Prep

Number to 20 Spinning Wheel - Last one standing

Focus: number to 20 number identification

Materials:

How it works

1. Each student is given a number card from 1–20.

2. Spin the number wheel.

3. When the wheel stops, students check their cards. If they spun number matches their card, they sit down.

4. Continue spinning until only one student is left standing – they are the winner!

Year 1/2

Race to 50

Focus: addition within 20

Materials

- Dice (2 x 6 sided dice)

- Counters or small objects

- A number track on the floor or table (0–50) per partner/small group

How it works:

  1. Lay out a number track (0–50) on the floor or table.
  2. Each student has a counter or token at 0.
  3. Students roll two dice and add the numbers together.
  4. They move their counter forward the sum of the two dice.
  5. The first student to reach the end of the track wins.
  6. Students must say the number sentence aloud before moving their counter.

Year 3/4

Race to 100

Focus: Addition of 3 digit numbers

Materials: Grid to 100 and 2x6 sided dice per 3-4 peers.

How it works:

  1. Divide the class into groups of four.
  2. Students take turns rolling 2x6 sided dice.
  3. They can choose to add the numbers together or multiply two of the numbers to calculate their move.
  4. Students move their counter forward on the board by that amount.
  5. The first student to reach 100 exactly is the winner.

Year 5/6

Factor Frenzy

Focus: factors, multiples, multiplication and division.

Materials: whiteboard, markers

Teacher has a list of numbers ready (e.g. 24, 36, 45, 60, 72, 84)

How it works:

  1. The teacher calls out a number (e.g. 36). Groups have 60 seconds to:

    - List as many factors as possible

OR list the first 6 multiples

OR write 3 multiplication and 3 division facts connected to the number

  2. When time is up, groups hold up boards.

Teacher to allocated 1 point per correct factor

Bonus point if they find all factors1 point for every correct fact family

GRIP Leadership Day

Yesterday the Year 5 and 6 students attended the GRIP Student Leadership Conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The GRIP Student Leadership Conference is unique in that it concentrates specifically on training student leaders for their role as school leaders. The style, topics, and content of this conference all focus on what the students can do right now.

The day focused on the theme: 'I Accept the Challenge.' The students were involved in different workshops throughout the day focusing on the following topics:

  1. What should leaders do at our school?
  2. Integrity - The way I can lead every day
  3. New ideas for our school
  4. The challenges leaders face with a new idea
  5. Q&A With GRIP Leadership Team

Thank you to Miss Privitelli and Mrs Gerecke for accompanying the Senior children to this event.
