Y4: Democracy, Community and Me Incursion

As part of our Humanities learning this term, the Year 4 students took part in the 'Democracy, Community and Me' incursion to explore how democracy works in Australia and within our communities.
During the session, students learned about the purpose of voting, the role of elected representatives, and how decisions are made in council meetings. They discussed important democratic values such as fairness, equality, and the importance of having a voice.
Students participated in a simulated election, complete with a voting area and voting centre. They cast their votes to elect a judge and six council members, gaining a real understanding of how the voting process works and why it is such an important part of democracy.
After the election, students took part in a mock council session where they discussed a realistic community issue similar to what might be raised in a real council meeting. It was wonderful to see students confidently sharing their opinions, listening respectfully to others, and working together to reach decisions.
The incursion was an engaging and hands-on way for our Year 4 students to connect their classroom learning to real-world democratic processes. They learned a great deal and had lots of fun along the way!
