A Winning Start for ICOM Debaters
Students from the Islamic College of Melbourne recently participated in the first round of the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) Schools Competition, hosted at Williamstown High School on the 10th March, alongside 14 schools from across Melbourne’s western suburbs.
Our students represented the College with confidence, preparation, and professionalism, achieving an excellent start to the season with five debate victories. Notably, all ICOM Grade B and Grade D teams were successful in their rounds, reflecting the strong effort and teamwork demonstrated by our debaters.
We are particularly proud of the following students who were recognised by adjudicators with Best Speaker awards:
- Mayesha Ahmed
- Rida Maheen Khan
- Fatima Akbani
Farhan Ahmed
Beyond the competition results, the evening provided an important learning opportunity for students. Debaters received valuable adjudication feedback, allowing them to reflect on their arguments, refine their speaking skills, and observe debating styles from students across other participating schools.
Congratulations to all students involved for their dedication and commitment. We look forward to building on this strong start as we progress through the upcoming rounds of the competition.
ICOM Students Excel in Monash Asian Studies Debating Competition
Students from the Islamic College of Melbourne recently participated in the Monash Asian Studies Debating Competition, held online, where they competed against Camberwell Grammar School, Canberra Girls Grammar School, and Mentone Grammar School.
Despite taking place on a Saturday morning following Eid celebrations, our students demonstrated excellent commitment, preparation, and teamwork throughout the event. Debaters engaged with a range of complex and contemporary topics, including:
- That India should pursue the development of Special Economic Zones
- That conscription in South Korea should be abolished
That Asian nations should prioritise the development of esports over physical sports
Students delivered well structured arguments, responded effectively to opposing viewpoints, and demonstrated strong collaboration within their teams. Their efforts resulted in winning all rounds across the competition, reflecting their preparation and engagement.
The competition provided a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of regional issues, strengthen public speaking skills, and gain experience debating against students from a range of schools. We congratulate all participants on their excellent effort and look forward to the upcoming finals!
