LITTLE MERMAID

At the end of term 2 some of our students had an exciting time, travelling to Warrnambool  to watch their classmate Clancey in “Little Mermaid “

She was outstanding, and everyone at Mortlake College is very proud of you.

Our wellbeing team have purchased some new equipment for students to use outside at lunchtimes. These have proved very popular with students looking for something fun to do over lunchtimes. We have jumbo blocks, beanbag toss, jumbo snakes and ladders, quoits, finska, giant connect 4, fuzzy felt pictures, giant jenga blocks, art equipment, train sets, badminton, and lots more!

And our favourite 4-legged friend Ziva can often be seen joining in the fun, or just hanging around for a pat.

Come and find us in the undercover area every lunchtime!

COBRAM ESTATE EXCURSION

On Tuesday the 23rd of July, the year 9 students embarked on an excursion to the Cobram Estate facility in Lara. The purpose of the excursion was to expand our knowledge and options regarding career pathways– and boy was it a success. In our time at the plant; we explored various fields of the business.

We learned about the horticultural side of things at Cobram Estate, a particular focus on how the tree growth system is operated. Cuttings from the original olive trees are recycled to create new ones, a very sustainable approach for such a large business. We learned that the propagation room where some of these cuttings are held has the capacity to hold 600,000 specimens!

Everyone was amazed by the machinery which was used to bottle, label, pack and wrap the products. There were also forty-eight huge vats, each containing a million dollars worth of olive oil.

After that we were also very privileged to taste two samples of olive oils, the second of which unanimously decided by the cohort to be superior to the first. We learned of all the health benefits of olive oil before exploring the lab.

The lab was amazing by the way. It mostly consisted of chemistry-related things such as chromatography (a separation technique), but there was also a small sector involving microbiology.

To conclude the visit, we were very lucky to be given little goody bags with two different types of olive oil and a little ‘Cobram Estate’ branded serving plate.

A huge thank you to Mr. D and Liz for taking us to Geelong for the experience, as it really has opened our eyes to all the opportunities and pathways that lie before us.
