STEM Challenge

Twelve students from St Brendan’s attended the STEM Challenge at BlueScope Steel, on Thursday 1st of August 2024, making up three teams of Grade 6’s. In the lead up to the challenge, Mr Barry had prepped us on how to make the planes, but we were still nervous and excited in a mix of both.

We were all seated at different tables with our team, and we had four A3 pieces of paper on our tables. We had 30 minutes to build our planes, though ours only took 5 minutes. Challenge 1 was all about distance. You would line up with your team, and one at a time you would go. After you flew your plane, and it landed, the judges would measure the distance, and how long it was in the air, then times the two together. When every team had gone, the judges calculated the top 5 teams and whichever teams were in the top 5 would go to the next challenge. Sadly, only two of our teams made it to the second challenge, one with an altogether score of 45.15, and the other only .15 behind.

Next challenge we had to aim our planes for a 50cm diameter circle, and get them in. If you got yours in you got a point. Both St Brendan’s teams sadly didn’t get any points, but St Mary’s and Tyabb Railway did. But because none of the other teams got any points, Claire, Milla M and one other student had to see which of the three could get their plane in the circle first.

In the end, St Mary’s came first, Tyabb Railway second and Hastings third. St Brendan’s came 4th and 5th , and won $150.00. How cool is that?!?
