Mr. John Ryan - Deputy Principal

The Resilience Project at Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College

Since 2013, Resilient Youth Australia have surveyed more than 750,000 young Australian school students, aged 7-18 years, using international gold standard mental health scales.

This work has resulted in a peer-reviewed publication, such as Centofanti et al. (2019) 'Establishing norms for mental well‐being in young people using the General Health Questionnaire,' Australian

Journal of Psychology 71:2, DOI: 10.1111/ajpy.12227.

This report presents all your student mental health data in one place. It includes six (6) gold standard measures of mental health, each reported by year level and gender against Australian Norms. The six

measures reported are:

  • Life Satisfaction
  • Hope
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Coping
  • Connection to Nature

During Term Two, the College surveyed all students to provide a “construct view”. Multiple items make up the construct view and feedback are provided to the College through our online portal.

In addition, university partners of the Resilience Project have developed three key measures presented in scatterplot format:

Resilience Score (Life Satisfaction & Hope)

Healthy Mind Score (Anxiety & Depression)

Ready to Learn Score (Anxiety & Coping)

If your child or someone in the family is experiencing a form of anxiety the School TV resource would be a valuable tool to use. Just follow the link below to find out more.

In order to understand resilience, it is vital develop a knowledge of Hope. See below.

Parents need to be compassionate people so that their children and family benefit form this. Self-care is very important. You can't pour from an empty cup. While you are working on making your children more resilient don't forget to look after yourself too. Ask yourself the following questions:

How are you doing?

What do you do to practise self-care?

Consider what you do for each of the following areas;

  • Healthy Habits (sleep, exercise, healthy eating)
  • Screen time
  • Connection – with people and nature
  • Mindfulness or prayer
  • Gratitude practise
  • Empathy (little acts of kindness)

We look forward to sharing more about the Resilience Project at Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College.
