This year Holy Name is joining the World Literacy Foundation to spread the joy and power of reading during Book Week 2024.
The World Literacy Foundation is leading this year's Book Week Fundraiser aiming to provide books and educational resources to children in underserved communities in Kayunga, Uganda. The initiative encourages early learning centres, primary & secondary schools in Australia to fundraise by hosting book related activities during book week in August.
The Book Week Fundraiser donations will go to Uganda due to 95% of children in rural areas not owning a single book. With resources scarce, only a small 12% of children have the ability to read. The money raised will help to build 5 school libraries giving access to over 2,500 books directly to Ugandan children. The World Literacy Foundation is excited to see the appeal combat the high illiteracy rates linked to low life expectancies and poverty in these areas.
During Book Week, a Book Sale will be set up outside the Italian Room. Families are welcome bring in second-hand books so that we can sell and raise money for the Uganda project. Please make sure these are in a great condition and appropriate for primary school aged children. The Book Sale will run from Wednesday 15th August to Thursday 22nd August, each lunchtime outside the Italian room.
On Monday 19th August, in place of assembly, we are inviting all families to join the students in their House Colours to share their favourite books. The school will be open from 2.45pm, and students will be dismissed from their House colour locations at 3.20pm. We encourage everyone, adults included, to bring their favourite book to share that afternoon. Students are invited to wear their house colour T-shirts on the day.
Our annual parade will be held on Wednesday 21st August at 9am in the school hall. Everyone is welcome to attend, and get into the spirit of Book Week. If you're unsure about costume ideas, take a look below at some of the magical characters that are found in books. From wizards to dragons, witches to pirates, princesses to pikachus, your imagination can take you anywhere!
As always, some competitions will be running throughout the week, and the winners will be announced in Week 7. Students will have an opportunity to compete as a class, or individually. Make sure your name is on the entry form which you can collect from the library on Thursday next week.

2024 Book of the Year Awards: Early Childhood Shortlisted
On Thursday 15th August, Jane Godwin will be visiting our school to talk to students about reading and writing. Jane is a highly acclaimed author of over forty books for children and young people. Jane’s picture books include: Go Go and the Silver Shoes, Tilly, Don’t Forget and Sing Me the Summer.
This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to continue to engage with literature and learn even more about the practices of professional authors and how they write the interesting and engaging stories we love.
Thank you
