IB Chemistry
IB Chemistry Guest Lecture
The IB chemistry class was extremely lucky to have Professor Lucet come to our class on Friday 19th July. Professor Lucet is the head of the Chemical Biology division at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, and Laboratory Head for a project that researches the root causes of diseases, specifically studying protein kinases which regulate a number of biological processes in the body. She talked to us about a technique used in her lab, X-ray crystallography, a technique that uses X-rays to determine the structure of complex biological molecules such as proteins. She explained in detail how the technique works and how the data is used to determine structures as complex as DNA. This was interesting for all of us as this is a topic that we study in Higher Level IB chemistry, so it was so helpful to have an expert talk to us about it. She also included insights into her projects in this field, which opened our eyes to what careers in science could look like.
We thank her for coming, and generously donating her time to us!
