Library News

It has been a busy year in Library with just over 31,000 student book loans during 2024. As of Thursday 11 December, there were still 299 books overdue, and there are also many “missing” books, so please look at home and in school bags and classrooms. Please keep looking for the telltale Wales Street barcode that goes without a “cancelled” stamp on the title page of the book, and any home readers, and return them to the school this year.

We have had Book fairs, a second-hand book sale, an author visit, Book Club (thanks to Meg and parents) and Book Week celebrations to enjoy. Thank you to everyone who encourages their children to explore the joy of reading.

Just because it is Summer holidays, please don’t stop reading. The Library has closed for borrowing over the school holidays so we can sort it out for next year, but Library classes and Library Club are continuing with our “sometimes books” during December.

To find books to read over summer, students have suggested Opportunity shops, Street libraries, Book shops, friends, home libraries and of course your local Public Library. The Big Summer read is on again and Darebin Libraries have sent through all the information you need to join in. Look in this Newsletter for three pages of information and activities: the first has links to information on how to enter and the second and third are a fun activities to encourage your children to join.

Remember reading is just like physical activity, “use it or lose it!”. Studies show that if children stop reading for a few weeks, their reading skills go backwards, so keep practising.

Have a safe, happy, healthy and reading holiday. See you all next year.
