Dear families
As the year comes to a close, we reflect on an incredible journey filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable memories. In Year 2, students explored the world around them with curiosity and enthusiasm, building knowledge and friendships along the way.
From mastering new skills in reading, writing, and math to creative projects, exciting excursions, and playground adventures, this year has been a celebration of teamwork, resilience, and fun. Together, we have laughed, learned, and supported one another, creating a classroom community we will always cherish.
We are so proud of everything Year 2 has achieved and can't wait to see all the amazing things they will accomplish in the future. Here’s to a year well spent and memories that will last a lifetime!
Here are some of the students' achievements over the year:
Reading
This year in Year 2, students have developed their reading skills through a range of activities. They explored different text types, practiced decoding strategies, and worked on fluency and comprehension. Students also shared their thoughts about stories and made connections to their own experiences, fostering a love for reading.
Writing
Throughout the year, Year 2 students explored various forms of writing, developing their skills across a wide range of genres. They crafted imaginative narratives, persuasive texts to express their opinions, and clear procedures to explain how things are done. They also wrote detailed recounts of personal experiences, informational reports to share facts, and engaging biographies and autobiographies to tell life stories. This variety allowed students to express their creativity, structure their ideas, and enhance their understanding of different writing purposes.
Maths
This year in Maths, Year 2 students developed a wide range of skills across different areas. They explored addition and subtraction strategies to solve problems efficiently. In measurement, they learned about time, length, mass, capacity, and volume. They also studied probability and graphing, creating pictographs, bar graphs, and line graphs using everyday data. Students were introduced to multiplication and division through strategies like grouping, using arrays, number lines, skip counting, and sharing equally, while also discovering the relationship between the two operations. Additionally, they expanded their understanding of spatial language by learning to give and follow directions to navigate from one place to another.
Inquiry
This year in Inquiry, Year 2 students embarked on a journey of discovery across a variety of engaging topics. They began by exploring the concept of family, learning about the different family structures and roles within their community. They then delved into geography, investigating landforms and water bodies and creating dioramas or maps to represent their community and its surrounding natural features. Following this, students explored the fascinating world of animals, examining life cycles, adaptations to changing environments, and discussing ways they can contribute to environmental conservation. Finally, the students learned about the diverse cultures within Australia and neighboring countries, such as New Zealand, Fiji, India, Nepal, and others, celebrating the rich cultural backgrounds represented in their own classroom.
This term, we explored Aboriginal culture, focusing on their art and the way they use pictures and drawings to tell stories. As a class, 2F collaborated to create this stunning wall art of Australia, inspired by the traditional colours and techniques often used in Aboriginal artwork.
SEL
This year in Social and Emotional Learning, Year 2 students explored the core values of our school and how to demonstrate them in their daily lives. They learned about respect, kindness, integrity, accountability, and resilience. The class also discussed the importance of embracing differences, such as skin colour, and understanding that while we may look different on the outside, we are all the same inside. Students explored friendships, how to support one another, and how to ask for help when needed. They also practiced sharing and gained a better understanding of gender and its role in our community.
