The day started off strong with students showing outstanding effort in individual events before finishing off even stronger in the freestyle and medley relays, allowing McKinnon to once again be the Kingston Division Champions.

Emma Baldwin (Year 8) showed an outstanding performance in her events with 1st in 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 2nd in 50m butterfly and 3rd in 50m breaststroke, 100m butterfly. This success awarded her Age Group Champion.

Bob Xu (Year 9) had a dominating performance in the pool with 1st in 50m backstroke, 200m individual medley, 2nd in 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 3rd in 100m butterfly which awarded him as Age Group Champion.

Other outstanding performances include Isabella Ruthven (Year 11) (50m backstroke), Tiffany Guo (Year 7) (50m butterfly), Elliot Mulholland Pyle (Year 8) (50m backstroke) and Ruma Lee (Year 9). Outstanding individual performances included Isabella Ruthven (Year 11) (50m backstroke) (50m butterfly), Oscar Xu (Year 8) (50m butterfly and freestyle) and Amy Zheng (Year 7) (50m backstroke).

The finale of the day allowed McKinnon to showcase our greatest strength which is the relays.

We won seven of a possible twelve freestyle relays and three of a possible six medley relays. To top off a great performance, the 12-13 Boys 200m Freestyle Relay team Oscar Xu (Year 8), Elliot Mulholland Pyle (Year 8), Andrew Vu (Year 7) and Alex Chivers (Year 8) set a new record of 2:09.61 beating the previous record by 2 seconds.

YEAR 8 CRICKET

The Year 8 Cricket team had a fantastic day representing McKinnon with great fighting spirit and teamwork. The day ran smoothly, and the team showed determination and sportsmanship throughout the matches.

It was truly a team effort, with everyone contributing both on and off the field. Despite an impressive batting display from Anushka Mehta, who scored two unbeaten 50s in 8-over innings, McKinnon unfortunately fell short of securing the pennant.

Bowling and fielding were shared among the team, with special mentions to Falak Syeda, Ayaan Srinivasan, and Ayush Mukherjee for their efforts in keeping the opposition under pressure and taking wickets. A big well done to Max De Ryk for his leadership and composure in captaining the side.

Overall, it was a great day of cricket, and the team should be proud of their efforts. Well done to all involved!

YEAR 7 BOYS CRICKET

The Year 7 Cricket team played against Bentleigh, Brighton, Parkdale and Beaumaris at the Kingston Division gala at Caulfield Park. The day was a major success, the team demonstrated the McKinnon school values of success, integrity, community and resilience.

The team was captained by Neal Guliya and Aarav Vinothkumar as the vice-captain. Neal and Aarav led at the front with their fantastic batting display against Beaumaris in the final match of the day with the winning team moving onto regionals. The boys put on an unbeaten score of 0/78 off 8 overs. Beaumaris fought well putting on a strong opening partnership before Reid Johnson, Vince Shah and Ayush Srinivasa took vital wickets which led McKinnon to victory over a strong Beaumaris team.

Bowling, fielding and batting were all highlights throughout the day. Jarryd Wilson displayed fantastic wicket keeping skills in the heat and wicket keeping for all four games, whilst Ethan Jowett, Siddharth Nandigam and Felix Nutting were fantastic in the field. Koby Rood chimed in with some great spin in our first game putting the pressure on the Bentleigh batsman. Cooper Watts, Rohan Praveen Gowda, Timothy Tan and Pratham Gupta scored runs and took wickets respectively against Brighton. The whole team contributed on and off the field which made the day run smoothly for all involved.

Fortunately, McKinnon won all four games and now moves onto regionals in late October. Well done, you should be proud of your effort.

YEAR 7 HOUSE BASKETBALL

Over the last two weeks the Year 7s have had some fierce competition on the basketball court with rounds being played between Chisholm & Flynn and Gilmore & Monash. These games were closely contested with some outstanding skills on display.

The grand final was also another fiercely contested game, with each team boasting around 20 players all vying to get on court. Chisholm took an early lead, scoring some valuable lay up’s and 3-point shots. But Nicholas Wilkins from Monash scored a 3 pointer and assisted in some dominating turnovers to bring his team back into the game.

Unfortunately for Monash, the height and skill of the Johnson twins and Flynn Walker from the Chisholm team meant they were unable to take the lead.

Congratulations to all of the students who played during the series, and especially to Chisholm for taking out the 1st of the lunchtime sports events.

Keep an eye on compass for more lunchtime activities coming soon.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL SCHOOLS CUP (4-7 MARCH)

Congratulations to McKinnon Secondary for taking out the Champion School title for 2025 in the Beach Schools Cup from Tuesday 4 to Friday 7 March.

With a beautiful sunny day and great conditions on Tuesday, the Year 7 boys and girls were delighted to receive a silver medal. The Year 8 boys won gold, the Year 8 girls came 3rd. With some challenging heat and gusty winds during Wednesday, two of our Year 9 boys pairs came equal third and Year 9 girls pairs also third. Thursday was a quieter day, but the wind picked up in the afternoon which made it very challenging to play! Well done to the Year 10 boys for securing a gold medal and a third to the Year 10 boys pairs. Year 10 girls (4s) and pairs won silver medals.

On Friday we finished off strong with a gold medal from the Year 12 girls (4s) and the Year 11 boys (4s) who finished 3rd. Thanks to our amazing Years 9, 10 and 11 coaches who helped out with our Year 7s on Tuesday. Thanks to all the staff who took time out of their busy schedules to get up early to watch some beach volleyball and soak up some sunshine.
