IMPROVING NUMERACY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM AT MCKINNON SECONDARY COLLEGE
Improving numeracy is a key focus this semester at McKinnon Secondary College.
Recognising the importance of mathematical skills in every aspect of life, we are working to improve how we integrate numeracy into all subjects across the curriculum. Whether in science, geography, history, and the arts, numeracy plays a vital role in helping us analyse, interpret, and make informed decisions in our daily lives and develop a deeper understanding of how math works in the world around them.
Numeracy isn't just about numbers in a math classroom - it's about understanding data, interpreting graphs, and applying problem-solving skills to real-world situations. Whether you’re budgeting your weekly expenses, following a recipe or interpreting sports statistics, numeracy is an essential skill that influences everything we do.
We encourage parents to support their child's numeracy development by valuing and being positive about the importance of practice, attention to detail and the reasonableness and accuracy of their answers.
Students need opportunities to recognise that mathematics isn’t just for the classroom – it’s a vital skill used in everyday life and across countless careers. As shown in the image, most occupations require numeracy skills.
From trades to healthcare, finance to technology, workers rely on numbers, data, and problem-solving daily. Builders measure and nurses calculate medication doses.
By developing strong numeracy skills, students open doors to more career opportunities and greater confidence in tackling real-world problems. Let’s work together to make numeracy a key part of our learning experience at McKinnon Secondary College!
