Grade 3 & 4

Term 4, Week 2

Welcome back to the last and busiest term of the year. The children have settled well back into the routines of Year 3 and 4. Keep checking Compass for all the fun things that will happen this term. Just a reminder that being a SunSmart School, all students are required to bring and wear a school hat during Term 4.

In Reading, we continue to focus on non-fiction texts. We will review and revise a range of reading toolbox activities that we have introduced this year. Students will continue working on expanding their sticky note connections to broaden their thinking and understanding.

In Writing, we’ve started to explore different ways of unpacking our thinking about things that interest or inspire us. We are aiming to support the students to shape their thinking into strong quality writing pieces. We’ve been looking at writing Inspirations (seeds) relating to our topic of ‘Erosion and Human Impact’, and learning how to use different tools (methods) of  recording our thinking. This term we will also be revising the text structure and language features of persuasive writing and the key techniques we need to ensure our opinions and voices are heard.

This term in Maths, we have started looking at decimals. Decimals represent a fantastic opportunity to explore all about how our place value system works and how it changes when dealing with numbers less than zero. We have explored tenths and hundredths, and compared them to fractions to further understand the relationship between decimals and fractions. We will also explore money, looking at the way in which our money system works and providing a clear link with the hundredths that we will have just finished looking at in decimals. As the term goes on, we will also explore graphs and data, looking at various forms that data collection and graphing can take. Lastly, we will examine shapes, exploring area and perimeter, as well as how we can transform and change various shapes. It is shaping up to be a fantastic final term in maths!

In Integrated Studies, we are beginning Term 4 exploring erosion and weathering. Aspects of these topics that we will cover will include, the difference between erosion and weathering, how it affects and changes our world and methods people use to reduce its impact where necessary. From this, we are looking at other parts of our environment and investigating sustainability, the importance of natural habitats and the role that forests and the natural world play in our own lives.
