Foundation and Year 2

Year 2

What an amazing term we have had so far, it has certainly flown by!  Our Year 2’s have been wonderful in tackling and approaching their learning with such determination and perseverance.

In reading, students have been practising their reading comprehension skills by identifying the main idea and the supporting details when reading.  We have enjoyed reading a range of different stories and texts.

In writing, the students have been writing ‘small moment’ stories which are personal narratives that involve narrowing the focus to one idea. While writing our ‘small moments’ the students have been using descriptive language to help the reader visualise that moment in time.

In maths, we have been focused on practising our strategies for addition and subtraction problems, telling the time and how we can rotate, flip and slide objects and shapes.

Our highlights so far this term have been the Colour Run, practising for our Christmas Concert and Cricket Blasters.

Another highlight has been reflecting on all the amazing learning we have done throughout the term!

Foundation

On Wednesday 15th of November our students went on their first excursion to Rain, Hayne and Shine Farm in Balnarring. This excursion complimented our inquiry unit about birth to adult development and paddock to plate. Students were given the opportunity to get up close and personal with many different animals such as calves, piglets, rabbits, emus, cows, donkeys and horses just to name a few.  A highlight of the day was watching the farmer milk the cow, then having the opportunity to churn the milk into butter and finally getting to taste it.  Students also thoroughly enjoyed their tractor ride around the farm.  It was such a wonderful day and our students represented our school beautifully. Our bus drivers commented that they were the best-behaved children of this age group that they have had the pleasure of driving.

In the classroom this term our Foundation students have been working on Problem Solving where they have been required to use strategies that they have learnt to help themselves solve problems they have found challenging.  At first our students found this quite difficult and wanted to give up, however as the term went on it was so pleasing to see them begin to work through their maths problems and collaborate to come up with a variety of solutions to the problems. They students really enjoyed using a range of hands on resources to assist them.
