Term 3 update

Term 3 was another busy (and fun-filled) term for all of our Senior School sports.

We finished up with 12 teams across six different sports, with everyone having an amazing time! School sports provide students with a great opportunity to get active, make new friends, try a new sport and ideally, encourage students to keep playing throughout their time at St Mary’s.

A big shout out to our 1st Grade Netball team who qualified for the Southern SATIS Final but just couldn’t match the fast pace and accuracy of a very experienced Guilford Young team. On the plus side, our team is still relatively young with a number of players only in Year 9, so as they play together over the next few years, this team should have a very strong foundation to build on.

Year 9 player, Bella Turner was voted the team’s Most Valued Player by her teammates. Congratulations on a great achievement, Bella!

In addition to all the after-school sports, Term 3 was also time for swimming! We kicked off the season with the St Mary’s Swim Trials and the following swimmers were Age Group Winners:

U13: Co-winners Ella Geard and Charlotte Pritchard

U14: Hayley Wasala

U15: Ella Striker

U16: Maddy Mackey

Open: Abi Spilling

Our 2023 Overall Swimming Champion for 2023 is Ella Striker.

Nagle House took out honours for the most participants, which will make the final race to the overall House Cup winner very interesting!

St Mary’s also participated in the Southern and State SATIS Swimming Carnivals which were held at the Doone Kennedy Aquatic Centre. A very big thank you to all the swimmers for their commitment, hard work and most importantly their never give up attitude.

Congratulations to Year 11 swimmers Mykala Mastrocola and Abi Spilling, pictured below, who were selected as Co-Captains.

Our Year 7/8 Hockey team had another great season qualifying for the final against The Friends’ School. At the end of the game scores were level at two each, and even with five minutes' extra time, we were unable to secure the win, with Friends’ finishing on top due to their better goal difference. Well done to coach Ruth and all the players!

As we near the end of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every student who participated in a sport throughout the year. A very big thank you as well to all the parents who offered to assist with coaching. As you would know, without coaches, team managers and scorers, it would be impossible for me to put teams on the park. Enjoy the rest of 2023 and a well-deserved break over summer! I hope to see everyone back in action in 2024.

Year 3-6 Athletics Carnival

What a fantastic day we had at our 3-6 athletics carnival! This day never disappoints, it is one of my favourite events on our sporting calendar. There’s always so much colour and chanting, so many happy faces and laughter, and fantastic spirited participation, not to mention awesome sportsmanship and support of one another.

Individual success is great, but the carnival is all about participation and doing your best. Judging by the smiles spotted around the Domain, it was clear that those in attendance did just that!

Rowing - Come and Try Day

The SMC/SVC Rowing Club hosted a 'come and try day' on Monday 25 September for Year 6 students and their families eager to learn more about the rowing program.

Prospective rowers were given the chance to get into the boats and set out onto the water for a leisurely row, as well as tour the New Town Bay Rowing Centre facilities and meet the current rowing coordinator, coaches and U16 and Open team.

The day was a great opportunity for students to learn about the sport of rowing and an enjoyable experience for all.
