Focus on Learning

Student Teachers

Last term we were lucky to have two student teachers join our primary classrooms.  We thank Miss Cooper and Mrs Smyth for their commitment to their roles, and the enthusiasm they brought to the classroom.  Good luck for the rest of your teaching journey; we hope to see you again at St Joey's in the future!

Coolamon Challenge - Week 10

Congratulations to our winners from Week 10 - Luca and Alex !  They received a voucher for a complimentary ice-cream courtesy of The Coolamon in Quirindi.

This week's challenges are Maths related.  Good luck!

Nature Ninjas - our gardening club

Our Nature Ninjas have already been hard at work this term, planning an array of projects for our school garden areas.  In the next fortnight, we will be focusing on germinating a variety of seeds to add into our garden.  We are hoping to propagate tomatoes, radish, strawberries, zucchini and cucumber.

We are also revitalising an area of our Wellness Garden.  We are hoping to plant perennial flowers as well as some strawberries, to enhance this space into a colourful oasis! Stay tuned for our before and after photos.

Lastly, our new additions (the chickens!) will be arriving this week.  For the time being, Mrs Meade is bringing in some of her chickens.  But watch this space; eggs will be incubated, chicks will be hatched and every step will be shared through the newsletter.  Nature Ninjas will help with feeding the chickens our school food scraps and pellets, as well as collecting eggs.   Students who have worked so hard in Term 3 to help establish our Nature Ninja club will be given first preference to assist with the jobs needed.

Chicken Update

Below are some of the chickens Mrs Meade will be supplying until our chicks are ready to be brought in!

Here are the beginning stages of our chickens; the eggs!  These eggs will be incubated for around 21 days until they hatch.  For chicken eggs the temperature, humidity and rotation of the eggs must be correct to ensure high hatch rates...lucky a machine is doing the hard work for us!   The eggs range in colour: white, brown, dark brown, olive and green/blue.  This is because of the different breeds laying; a mix of wyandotte, aracuna, olive egger, barnevelder, coronation sussex and buff orpington.

Nature Ninja Spotlight

Each week we will be shining a spotlight on some of our devoted Nature Ninjas.  It is so wonderful to see the children enthusiastically engaging in each session out in the garden and lovely spring sunshine!
