Primary School

Head of Primary
Welcome to the new students who have joined the Primary School late in Term 3 and at the beginning of Term 4. We pray that they settle in very quickly and soon feel part of the Bayside Community. We welcome Miss Andrina MacDonald to the Primary Team for most of Term 4, as she teaches 1/2T from Week 3 to Week 9. Mrs Anna Lam will still be teaching 1/2T on a Wednesday.

One of the students, Ethan Kumnick, will be going on to represent the school at Regionals. On Friday 6th October, some of the Year 5/6 Girls participated in the Girls’ AFL Day and they returned to school with the ‘Runners Up’ Banner. Congratulations to all involved.

Prep Chicks
We have chicks in the Prep classrooms! The children were so excited to find a new chick hatched today while they were visiting the library!
Prep/1 Maths Groups
This week Prep B and Prep/1M started running their Math Group Rotations Program. The students enjoyed rotating through 6 different activities. They did an amazing job working in small groups, showing both their ability to work independently as well as small group focus work with a teacher.
These groups are designed to consolidate topics taught this year as well as strengthen student understanding of current areas taught in Mathematics. Mrs Blashki, Mrs Martin and Mrs Hooper were super proud of the way students participated in this new program and look forward to continuing it throughout Term 4.
1/2J Amazing Animals
Did you know that there are around 900 species of tarantulas? Jack wants to know how venom is made in a snake's body? Samuel informed us that falcons can fly down to 365 mph to catch their prey. Walter read that a female polar bear usually gives birth to two polar bears at a time.
Hudson announced that a huge herd of antelopes are called springboks and Jobe shared his findings on the octopus, that when in danger, an octopus can squirt black, gloopy ink out of its siphon to confuse attackers! Just a few snippets of conversations that have been overheard and captured in the classroom. We are very excited about our term's Integrated Studies programme on ‘Amazing Animals’.
During this term each student will choose a particular animal to investigate and research on their characteristics, habitat, behaviours and global sightings.
We will be heading to Melbourne zoo at the end of this month and heading over with the senior students to look at the animals on the north campus. So if you are at the library then pick out those non fiction information books or dig out National Geographical magazines and prepare to get excited about God’s amazing creations.
..And God said…. “ Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” And God said “ Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good” Genesis 1v 20-25.
We also celebrated the wonderful Karina Hooper who celebrated her 40th birthday. Mrs Johnson was not best pleased to share the path with a snake on a local walk but was happier to see a student on another walk!
Here is to a busy and fun filled term!

3/4 Celebration of Learning
On Wednesday the 13th of September, all 3/4 classes had a Celebration of Learning. At 3 o’clock, parents gathered to watch each class present a song they had been learning on the recorder. I felt nervous when we were about to perform our song on the recorder, but I felt proud of myself after we had done it!
After that, we all went back to our classrooms and showed our parents what we have been learning and working on in class this term. This included our Weather projects that we presented using Google Slides, our typed Camp Manyung recounts, our best handwriting samples, our book reports and our sun, Earth and moon mobiles. - Liora Van De Beek
3/4 Healthy Hearts Incursion
All of the Year 3/4s experienced the ‘Healthy Hearts’ session run by the Murdoch Institute Research team. Students learnt about how the circulatory system works and daily choices we can make to help our hearts be healthy. A number of students are involved in a blood pressure screening that will assist in this important research area.
3/4 Pink Day
5/6 City Camp
I am writing to you today to let you know all about camp! I enjoyed Ice skating the most because it was all about giving things a go and never giving up and trying your absolute best. It was a goal for me because things can be hard, so it was a really good experience.
Something I struggled with was hip-hop dancing and trying to keep up in the walking. But I dealt with the walking because I knew I was going to have a good time. I felt like I was falling behind in hip-hop because the moves were really quick and fast.
The one thing I learnt about myself is that I can make it to all the destinations without complaining about it, I can walk over 40kms in three days, and that I can do things that I never thought I could. I realised I get tired easily but I can make it. I'm proud of myself for giving it a go. I enjoyed having my friends and my teacher by my side to help me. - Anna Waterman
The activity I enjoyed most on camp would definitely have to be ice-skating. I enjoyed continuously skating around the rink while talking with my friends. The football game of Melbourne vs Collingwood was on the big T.V, so it was fun to watch that while skating.
Another activity I also really liked was going to Scienceworks and seeing how the night sky looked without any light pollution. It was surreal! The stars, planets and milky way were so cool.
One thing I struggled with was falling asleep after such a fun and exciting day. Every day was packed with so many fun activities that by the end of the day, I was very stimulated and excited for the next day to come.
At camp, you don’t just have fun and that’s it. You also get to learn LOTS about yourself and others! One thing I learnt about myself is that I actually can walk 40km in 3 days. (With the help of talking to my friends along the way, of course). Overall, City camp was AMAZING and 100% my favourite camp yet. - Eden Pickering
I enjoyed my first time ice skating on our Year 5/6 city camp, it was so much fun! I fell over because I was learning, and when I did Abby chuckled and then I laughed with her too. When I fell over it was like I dived into a freezing puddle of snow….brrrr!
We walked a lot on our camp and I struggled with walking because Miss Wright was going a bit too fast for me. It felt like my legs were going to fall off but I managed to stay with my group. I hung out with Anna and walked with her at the back of our group.
I Iearnt that when I walk for a long distance I can have a great song in my head, play a game or just make new friends. I have some wonderful memories of my time on 5/6 city camp. - Hannah Black
5/6 AFL Day
The Year 5/6 girls did a fantastic job on Friday when competing in the AFL Gala Day. They fought through the rain and cold, received many tackles, scratches and bruises and showed resilience against some tough opposition. They came second place and received a pennant for their hard work. An excellent effort!
Primary District Athletics
Winds were blowing and rain was imminent! However, that didn’t stop our years 3 to 6 students performing well at this year’s District Field Athletics event! Ballam Park Athletics track hosted some incredible performances of Shot put, Discus, High jump, Long jump and Triple jump!!!
We sent 53 students and had some stellar results! A massive congratulations goes to all the competitors performing against 11 other schools in our district. Making the District Athletics team is an achievement to be recognised. Out of the 53 students that competed, 12 students have finished top two in their event and now go through to the next stage (Northern Division Athletics day).
Northern Peninsula Athletics
Bayside Christian College had 12 students attend the Northern Peninsula Athletics Carnival. The rain held out as the students were able to cheer each other on throughout the day for the various events.
We are proud of their achievements:
- Ethan Kumnick 2nd place for high jump
- Toby De Haan 3rd place for hurdles
- Taya Thexton 3rd place for 800m
- Thomas Hooper 3rd place for 800m
- Abby Houben 4th place for discus
- Olive O'Brien 4th place for 1500m
- Olive O’Brien, Chloe Hoffman, Ella Hoffman, Lydia Teramoto came 4th place in the Girls 9/10 year olds 4 x 100m relay
- Chase McDermott 5th place in the high jump
- Lydia Teramoto for making the top 10 in the 100m
- Noah Hammond for making the top 10 in the triple jump
- Brielle Holbrook for making the top 10 in the triple jump
Congratulations Ethan Kumnick who will be going through to Regionals for High Jump! An excellent effort for all those involved!
5/6 Poetry
White
White looks like a fresh batch of vanilla ice cream
White sounds like a small creek waterfall
White smells like a little daisy in a pot
White tastes like a scallop fresh from a Seafood store
White feels like a freshly made sheet of paper
White is pure.
