Stage 3

A message from Stage 3

Welcome to Term 4!

After significant research and development from curriculum experts across the world, BVPS along with schools across NSW, have been preparing for the implementation of an updated English and mathematics curriculum. Stage 3 this term will be delivering newly developed and fully resourced units of work as part of the roll out. For our teachers, this is very exciting news. These reforms are in response to the culmination of research over the last decade into how students learn, develop and flourish.

The English unit of work is driven by the concept of narrative and the important role it plays in texts, around a camp fire or for knowledge sharing. Student work will be underpinned by an in-depth study of Storm Boy by Colin Thiele. The unit will focus on developing a broader vocabulary, reading fluency and thinking deeply about the purpose behind the choices the author has made, as well as the writing techniques he uses and how students can adapt them into their own writing.

The emphasis in mathematics is on making numbers real. Sometimes its easy to think of mathematics as just numbers but one should never forget that numbers are real things, such as lengths, money, data and computer code. This term in our classrooms, students will play with mathematics, be challenged by mathematics and come to see why we are all mathematicians.

The Stage 3 team are excited to share some work samples in the next S3 newsletter.
