Stage 1

A message from Stage 1

Welcome back to Term 4! We have loved hearing about the adventures the students had in the holidays. This term promises to be busy, so we ask parents and carers to ensure you are keeping up to date with activities and upcoming events by downloading the School Bytes app and checking School Stream messages.

English

This term we are exploring narrative texts using the seven steps to writing success program. This program lays the foundations in creating an engaging story in any form – written, spoken or visual. We are isolating writing skills into individual steps to ensure our students do not get ‘bogged down’ with writing the whole piece. This allows students to gain confidence in each building block then join it all together to become creative and engaging writers. Stay tuned for some sizzling stories in future newsletters.

We are learning to:

  • use new words and phrases
  •  comprehend a text

We know we are successful when we can:

  • understand the meaning of the new vocabulary I am learning
  • use new vocabulary to enhance my writing
  • answer questions about a text
  • use my background knowledge to make meaning from a text

Mathematics

We are learning to:

  •  identify the structure of 3D objects
  •  stack and pack cubes to make rectangular prisms

We know we are successful when we can:

  • sort a selection of items into 2D and 3D categories and give reasons for our choices
  • identify 3D objects and name their flat surfaces as 2D shapes
  • build rectangular prisms using cubes of a uniform size
  • fill a rectangular container with cubes so there are no gaps
  • make different rectangular prisms using the same quantity of uniform cubic units

Integrated Studies

We are learning about Australia’s location in the world and to locate continents and oceans on a world map.

We know we are successful when we can:

  • locate Australia on a world map
  • label the 7 continents and  5 oceans on a world map
  • explain where Australia is in relation to other continents

K-2 Athletics Carnival

Thank you to the parents and friends who came along to support our K-2 Athletics Carnival last week. It was a fun day of athleticism, learning new skills and making new friends. These events cannot happen without many hours of organisation. Kathy McMillan and a band of happy helpers spent many hours organising and preparing for the day. We are so very lucky at Ben Venue to have teachers dedicated to providing students with these fabulous experiences in a safe and inclusive environment.
