How the World Works: The Earth’s Place in Space

This term’s first Unit of Inquiry has seen the Year 2 students exploring Earth’s place in our spectacular Solar System. They have learnt about the objects in the Solar System, including the Sun, Moon, planets, comets and asteroids. They are currently working on an individual research and informative writing task in which they will present their understanding of several celestial objects in a booklet, poster or talk.

Other activities have included:

  • Producing a class Venn diagram to represent whether objects visible in the sky are seen in the day or at night – or both!
  • Making Moon artworks using salt water to show the Moon’s ability to reflect the Sun’s light rather than make its own
  • Researching and making Moon dioramas
  • Creating a Wonder Wall of questions that we are wondering about
  • Collaboratively creating a class Word Wall to use as a resource when spelling and writing
  • Observing the Moon each night as we learn about the patterns in the skies
  • Conducting a science experiment to see how shadows change during the day and learn about why this happens

We are looking forward to visiting the Grote Reber Museum and Mount Pleasant Radio Telescope and Observatory during Week 6, as we consider how technology has helped people to understand space.

During this Unit of Inquiry, we have been completely amazed by God’s handiwork in the skies above us. Each morning, we have been memorising and practising saying a bible passage from Psalm 19:

The heavens tell the glory of God.

The skies announce what his hands have made.

Day after day they tell the story.

Night after night they tell it again.

They have no speech or words.

They don’t make any sound to be heard.

But their message goes out through all the world.

    It goes everywhere on Earth.

Praise God for the wonderful work of His hands that we see each day and night!

Students will require a bag (separate to their school bag) to carry their towel and change of underwear and clothing to the pool each day. They are asked to wear their swimmers under their sports uniform each morning.

Parents are invited to attend but will need to sign in at the venue and no photography or video is permitted at the venue for child protection reasons.

We look forward to a wonderful week of water safety and students gaining confidence and improving their swimming skills.
