MRC Maths Trail P - 6
On Thursday 29th August, all P-6 students participated in the MRC Maths Trail where they worked in teams to solve 22 mathematical equations that had been hidden around the Early Years buildings. They were then able to solve the riddle "Are monsters able to count? Only if you Count Dracula!" The Teams were made up of a mixture of older students and younger students and it was wonderful to see all students challenged and engaged in this activity.
Yr 7 Humanities
Students were practicing their Source Analysis skills for their unit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. As part of Ancient History, museum procedures and artifact conservation are embedded within the discipline. One of the student's families provided materials for students to use during the lesson (Gunai-Kunai people).
In their latest unit on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, the Year 7 students have been honing their Source Analysis skills, looking at resources from Indigenous sources and determining what they told them about everyday life. This week was a culturally rich session, thanks to the artifacts generously provided by Emilee’s family, the Gunai-Kunai people. Emilee has been proud of her Indigenous heritage and has been open to sharing her family’s knowledge with her class throughout the year. These resources not only enhanced the students' learning experience but also offered a valuable lifetime learning experience for her classmates.
Year 10 Food Technology
The Year 10 students certainly know how to tantalize taste buds! they showcased their culinary skills by preparing mouthwatering fettuccine bolognese. The rich, meaty sauce, combined with the delicate pasta, was a perfect match. To complement the main course, they also whipped up some cheesy garlic bread that was simply irresistible.
The students' efforts were greatly appreciated by everyone who had the pleasure of tasting their delicious creations.

Hume Young Leaders Awards - Finalists and Winners
On Friday the 30th of August, a select group of our year 12 students along with their friends, family and staff members attended the Hume Young Leaders Awards Ceremony at Broadmeadows Town Hall.
6 of our students were acknowledged at this ceremony as being finalists for a leadership category recognised by a panel of members in the Hume community. Shalom Uatisone, Daman Meet, Alison Vong, Fatma Elserougi, Mantasha Shaikh and Lucas Soe Chu-Shing were all nominated as finalists for “young group of the year”. In addition to this, Shalom was nominated as a finalist for “young sports leader”, Lucas was nominated as a finalist for “young environmental leader” and Mantasha was nominated as a finalist for “young advocacy leader”, in separate categories.
The evening ran for a duration of 3 hours with many awards presented, entertainment from previous years winners and a formal dinner for students, families and staff to connect and network with panel members within the community.
We are so proud to announce that Shalom Uatisone and Lucas Soe Chu-Shing were presented as the winners in their individual categories for 2024.
Shalom was acknowledged on stage by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Hume City, and followed this with a speech of appreciation. Lucas was unable to attend the evening but prepared a speech in case, which Fatma accepted and then read out for him when he was announced as winner. We are so proud about how our students represent one another and how they celebrate the achievements of their peers.
Our finalists and winners will soon attend a leadership workshop later in the year where they can further network with others and expand their leadership skills and knowledge.
As a school community, we should all be proud of how we all contribute to the development of such incredible students who have become such inspirational leaders.
Notes of interest
In a conversation I had with Cr Naim Kurt he mentioned how he attended MRC recently to visit the primary school. He said it was the best school/experience he had with a school in recent memory. He spent a lot of time re-living this with me in conversation including showing me the videos. He was also extremely impressed with our year 12’s on the evening making an effort to continue to approach and talk to them. He spent quite a long time with Shalom and his father.

Akatsuki Junior High School at MRC
MRC was thrilled to host a group of 15 students and 1 staff member from Akatsuki Junior High School in Japan from August 19th to 26th. The visit provided a unique opportunity for our students and staff to experience Japanese culture firsthand and forge lasting friendships.
During their stay, the Japanese guests were fully immersed in Australian life. They participated in a variety of activities, including classroom lessons, sports, and cultural exchanges. Our students were eager to share their knowledge of Australia and its customs with their new friends.
One highlight of the visit was the homestay program, where Japanese students lived with MRC families. This experience allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of Australian family life and culture. The homestay families also enjoyed the opportunity to learn about Japanese customs and traditions.
The visit concluded with a farewell ceremony, where students and staff from both schools shared their memories and expressed their gratitude for the experience. The Akatsuki Junior High School group departed Australia with a newfound appreciation for Australian culture and a desire to return in the future.
