Homeless Action Now - Homeless Week 2024

Recently, the Middle School Student House Leaders and some representatives from the Student Service Council attended the Hobart City Mission’s Safe Sleep Space. Students were able to experience first-hand the crisis accommodation options there are for the homeless in Hobart, and how limited the resources are available for such a dire need. Inspired to help make a difference, the student leadership have designed two campaigns for the Middle School to raise awareness for the cause: a donation drive and a short film competition.

House Donation Drive

Students are keen to start donating items that are in most need at the Safe Sleep Space and Day Space. These include: instant coffee, tea, sugar sticks, long-life milk (or powder), snacks and treats, travel-size toiletries toothbrushes/paste, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, body wash/soap, and feminine Hygiene products. Collections can be made at the Middle School library in the allocated House tubs. Donations can be made up until Friday 13 September. Which House will donate the most this time?

House Short Film Competition

Individually or in groups, students are asked to create a short film (3 mins maximum) that promotes the 2024 Homeless Week theme of ‘Homeless Action Now!’ and raises awareness of homelessness in Hobart. Entries are due on Friday 13 September, with prizes up for grabs.

Book Week in the Middle School

We will be celebrating Book Week next week. The theme is “Reading is Magic!” On Wednesday, wear a magical accessory (or full costume!) and bring a gold coin donation for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Throughout the week, keep an eye out for Library displays, free bookmarks and quizzes.

Friends’ School Amnesty Battle of the Bands 2024

Thursday 29 August | 6pm to 9pm

The Friends’ School Amnesty Battle of the Bands is held in The Farrall Centre and will feature student bands from Years 7–12. Entry is gold coin donation and soft drinks will be available for purchase with all proceeds going to the school’s Amnesty group. VET students will cater for the event, with food available in the Farrall foyer between 5pm - 5.45pm.

Attending students are to be dropped off and collected from the venue. This is an ‘in-house’ event for school students and parents only. Any non-school student/adult arriving will be asked to leave, as The Friends’ School cannot accept responsibility for non-Friends’ students. There will be no pass-outs and there are to be no bags brought into the venue by students other than that required by the performers.

School parents are welcome to attend and will be seated upstairs in The Farrall Centre, students (Years 7 to 12 only) will be situated downstairs. We ask that audience members refrain from attending if unwell with flu-like symptoms.

We would love to see you come along and support the students at this evening of musical celebration.

Parent Presentation on Neurodiversity - NEXT WEEK

Wednesday 28 August | 7pm - 8.30pm at The Farrall Centre

The Middle and Senior Schools are embarking on a joint focus on Neurodiversity on 28 August encouraging our community to develop a shared language and toolkit on how to create a neuro-affirmative learning space. We have invited psychologist Emma-Rose Parsons from Spectrum House in Melbourne to assist us in starting a conversation and to provide our students with a greater understanding of neurodiversity. We will cover topics including:

  • Respectful boundaries
  • Safe risk-taking
  • Emotional regulation & stress management
  • Understanding neuro-divergence in your school (ADHD and Autism)

In addition, we will host a parent presentation evening on that day from 7pm until 8:30pm in The Farrall Centre, where Emma-Rose will focus on how to continue the conversation at home. Please come along and help us as a school community best support your child to flourish. You are welcome to bring your questions related to the above topics for a Q&A session after the presentation.
