Classroom learning
Book Week in Year 5/6 was BOOKulous!
For all of our Year 6 students 2024 marks the last book parade at Holy Rosary, so it was a day filled with colour, creativity and characters with a touch of ‘ I will miss Book Week at Holy Rosary.’
The theme ‘Reading is Magic’ was so appropriate with students and staff members creating magical displays, demonstrating their passion for books and reading.
Were you lucky enough to enjoy the displays? If not please come and visit, we’re sure that you'll be blown away!
Year 5/6 Sky
Our class Book Week book was ‘Hope is the Thing.’ A special book highlighting how birds HOPE. We used the author Johanna Bell’s idea to inspire our own writing and wrote our own examples of HOPE.
Our illustrations complemented our writing, just like the book. The illustrator Erica Wagner used mixed media collages on paper. Backgrounds are painted with watercolour, acrylic, gouache and ink. The collages used included leaf monoprints, coloured paper, book fragments and old artwork. Students made artistic decisions about how they would illustrate their writing. Their challenge was to include a whole A3 size paper, making it interesting and attractive for the audience.
We are proud of our work and can appreciate the time and commitment that authors and illustrators devote to produce a book from start to finish.
Hope is a writer expressing their art
Hope is a reader engaged with all heart!
Year 5/6N
Our class Book Week book was ‘Paper Flower Girl’. A touching story that explores the journey of a child as they navigate through the ups and downs of life. This exquisite, high-quality picture book captivates from the soft, detailed cover and beautiful endpapers through to the very end. The language is poetic and evocative, successfully using a range of literary devices like repetition, rhythm, and rhyme to create mood and atmosphere. The sophisticated vocabulary takes the reader on a journey alongside the girl, her creativity, and the giant with his demands.
Just like in the book, where the illustrator used a delicate combination of paper flowers, we put our creativity to the test. Our creations complemented our book, combining materials such as coloured paper, and even recycling unused books to bring the story to life.
We are proud of our work and have a new appreciation for the dedication that authors and illustrators pour into their craft, bringing a book from an idea to a finished masterpiece.
Year 5/6W
Our class book was Etta and the Shadow Taboo. When Etta steps on her sister Baawaa’s shadow, she discovers the Shadow Taboo and gains a deeper understanding of the importance of respecting both others' personal space and her own. This book is a beautiful exploration of profound themes, using poetry as a powerful medium to convey deeper meanings. Each poem is crafted with care, allowing the emotions and experiences of the characters to resonate deeply with the reader.
The poetic language enhances the narrative, transforming simple moments into rich, layered experiences that invite reflection and insight. Through its lyrical expression, the book captures the beauty and complexity of life, offering a reading experience that is both moving and thought-provoking.
We created a display featuring the shadows of animals, with each shadow symbolising the concept of personal space. This visual representation emphasises the importance of respecting boundaries, mirroring the themes explored in the book.
